Why do you hate teachers?
COVID is going to be bad news for the public education system.
I rarely wish I had my kids in private schools, but I think I was wrong on that. The good private schools around here are rocking it....meanwhile the public school system is mostly stepping on their dicks.
Did you plan on your kindergarten aged kid just hopping on the bus after their morning classes end and spending the afternoon at home alone, or what? Maybe I'm missing something, but if there's someone around for childcare, there's probably someone (i.e. that same person) that can do a shuttle to schoolThis quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. So currently we have our kids in daycare and they go and pick up the kids from the bus for afterschool care. But if CBE isnt providing yellow bus service to get kids home from school then im not sure what we are going to do as well as what all the other kids who are K aged would do.This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Based on that email I could be paying either 465/year for bus or 800/year, huge spike from 36/month
If they base the distance on a straight line then 800/year
If they base the distance on the actual road route they use, then 465/year
Knowing CBE they will demand the 800, this could be a fun argument with them

Cochrane has been this way forever. I asked my wife about the other Kindergarden Moms here and they all have a parent or grandparent available to transport the kid in the afternoon when there are no school buses operating. Some use full day Kindergarden which also solves the bus issue. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
It’s only a 10 month problem to deal with.

Yeah I think everyone wishes that were an option. Unfortunately at the moment the school wont host after school care in the school and theres only one aftercare program in walking distance that has a max of 15 kids (before covid time) across all ages. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. In our case we have a nanny. So I expected her to walk my kindergarten aged son to the bus stop and pick him up from it, she does not drive nor does she have a car. I work out of town half the time and my wife works downtown. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
There is no one size fits all solution, I am in the minority but would rather they do the alternate, full day kindergarten but only a few days a week, and I am willing to pay the full $800 transportation fee.

Ya that was an thought I had too, my parents live in Vancouver and initially I wondered about them coming out to help for the school year. But with Covid and no vaccine, I wouldn't want to put them at risk. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
My guess is there will be other parents in the the neighbourhood with the same situation, and someone will start organizing a ride share.
My wife has been crunching numbers and says one kid will be 800, other will be ~450. Still cheaper than before and after school care, so as long as that bus is slow, I win? This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Both my kids will be going to specialized programs way further than our local school next year.

Im pretty sure that it is based on a straight line. For instance on the CBE maps they just have a 1.6k perimeter around each school for designated walk zone. If i base it on roads to get from school to my house we are at 3.5km, however I know that we are within 2.4km because ive had emails from school bus service. Also I just measured straight line from school and im at 1.65k. The designated walk zone for my school doesn't cross 85th st SW though. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Every single bus route for my daughters school is within the 2.4km straight line, I’m betting a lot of schools are like that, I’m sure 2.4 wasn’t a random number
The straight line for me is 1.9km

How does the math on that work?

That doesn't sound like the math they teach at the TLC. More like the "discovery" math my kids are learning. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

Haha I looked on google maps and clicked directions, that got the road route. Then I drew a straight line to the school and measured distance, that is what popped up! Either way it is far away! This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Wife did some math, will be roughly $1.55 per trip for my kids. Can't beat that deal. I can't even be mad.
