How do oil and gas people fit into any of this? Is it still the attitude we chose the industry go fuck your self? Or do we count as being effected(affected?) by the massive drop in demand for our products due to Covid-19?

Like where do my contractors fall in all of this, should they be applying for CERB? My employees we laid off, EI OR CERB? What about me? I’m about to make zero dollars this month, pretty pumped for that haha

But the problem with the wage subsidy is you need to be working for there to be a wage to cover. 95% of our work got pushed out to Q4 or 2021 all together for the time being.


Then i thought maybe because I'm incorporated, i could do the $40k loan, use it for payroll and have the wage subsidy cover 75%, only use as much as i could pay back at a later date hoping there's some work and have the 25% of that forgiven?

i find it all fairly confusing haha.

Edit: and im not trying to rip the system off by any means, just trying to understand how to best direct my guys (and myself) to get what they need to survive until we hopefully pick back up. I have been talking with my accountant and we have some ideas on what we should be doing. just thought i'd see if anyone here had figured it out.

Yah, if you pay it off by Jan 2021 i think it is, so this is where it gets confusing haha... Why not borrow that, only use the $10k cover 25% of some payroll (the gov would pay 75% of payroll, as per their subsidy) and then pay it back so you get the $10k for free...? But they also say, that the company must make an effort to pay the 25% of wages, and if they cant it will be forgiven. Stipulations are $50k to $1mil in revenue and they will pay $847 weekly, up to $57k or something.. only until June 6th

It's fucking confusing to me... haha, but i think it's to help direct people away from CERB and EI

Watch the CRA website crash on April 6, about 00:05 Toronto time. The site does not function well during peak tax season (or at least hasnt) - this will just decimate them further.

So, perhaps this is a reading fail on my part, but I was on EI before all this shit started. I have a few more weeks left before it runs out. Can I apply for this benefit after it runs out or am I screwed by being caught in a loophole of the rules?

If I am already receiving Employment Insurance regular benefits, should I reapply for the Canada Emergency Response Benefit?

No. If you are already receiving Employment Insurance regular benefits, you will continue to receive these benefits until the end of your benefit period.

If you were eligible to Employment Insurance benefits that started before March 15, 2020, and these benefits end before October 3, 2020, you may then apply for the Canada Emergency Response Benefit if you meet the eligibility requirements, including that you have stopped work because of reasons related to COVID-19.

You cannot be paid Employment Insurance benefits and the Canada Emergency Response Benefit for the same period.

No.

Service Canada is processing all of these claims as quickly as possible.

I'm in the same boat too. Currently on EI, had finally come to terms that it was unlikely something would come to fruition in my role in O&G and I'd be working for the City landscaping this summer...now I don't know who the hell is hiring and might be stocking shelves if I'm lucky. I'm good until August through EI and then I don't know if CERB would cover a few months after that or what would happen.

Through the grapevine a friend of ours spoke with one of the infectious disease experts at UofC and he's estimating peak infection for Calgary to be around late May...I hope that isn't the case...

This whole situation feels surreal. Like I'm just waiting to wake up and get on with my life but instead feels like complete and utter limbo just plodding along through time.

Yeah my EI runs out around the same time. Though I want to go back to work badly (and try to get something resembling my old routine) it isn't in the cards right now since someone needs to stay home with our kid. Nowhere to place him for the day.

As for your comment about how long it will last.in Calgary, I would argue that unless a vaccine is found that this could be going on far longer than that.

Finally, I hear you about things being surreal. I went to the grocery store today and it was really odd how everything has changed. The bleak weather doesn't help. Absolutely a mental mindfuck.

This!! My mental health during all this is not good. First time in my working life being laid off, only 2 weeks in and I'm going crazy. Worrying about if I'm going to get re-hired, what to do with all my bills. Luckily I have a dog to keep me company during all this. This will pass. Tough times don't last, tough people do. And if my father got through the recession and being laid off in the 90s (he was a meat packer at Centennial), I can handle this.

Enjoy your time with family. I try to talk to my friends during the day, some are still working to keep that social aspect. Tackle any major home renovation tasks you couldn't do since working.

For me, I'm a hoarder/procrastinator, I'll buy things on sale (buy now think later) and then never had time to install them so nows the time to complete. Purchased a Chamberlain Garage Belt Door Opener in 2013 never installed. Same with a bunch of light fixtures. And then I'm going to try and tackle painting the interior walls of the kitchen and living room.

Speaking of mental health... It is indeed trying. I went from awesome employment to being off for 8 months, trying a crappy job just to make money for 4 months, back on ei now for months and now this.

I was already living a very unexciting life and now this for... who knows?
