    Default Adult Beginner Hockey

My buddy is considering a "Learn to Hockey" thing and I'm wondering if any of y'all have tried something like this. It sounds pretty close to ideal, but he lives mega south and the program seems to be more north. I think it's in those weird "Flames Rinks" near what looks like that old military barracks.
It feels like he would drive by 12 rinks to get there, so in such a large city, might there be a southern option?

Here's his skill level. He thoroughly understands all the hockey rules, many strategies and is a big fan. He can already skate without falling, but he can't stop properly or do cross overs or any tight turns, etc. and I doubt he can skate backwards. He's only ever played road hockey, so he hasn't figured out how to shoot a puck, but that should come quickly. He has never put actual hockey gear on.

Do you think this^ would be a good fit for him? It's called Discover Hockey.

Anyone who lives so far south that the Flames Community Arenas, on 47th Ave SOUTH are too far north, should consider moving to a small town in rural Saskatchewan, or better yet, Beaumont.

Why not just go to an outdoor rink when the temps drop again and pick up some shinny to start?

Beginner Sunday night ones at father David Bauer is a good start for him. It covers all the basics.

We were literally out on the ice today, but it's still different from the structure of benches, larger teams and boards.

Elbow river park has a great rink with boards and often a few goalies show up to make it more interesting than posts!

Max has his scouts in the stands?
I think any of the classes is a good start.

I hate shinny! Just a clump of people not knowing which position they're playing. No sustained plays. One and done chances gets boring to me.

i did the Discover Hockey Program, almost 10 years ago now

Was an excellent experience for me. I could already skate reasonably, but some people on my course could barely stay upright so there's definitely a good mix of level.

They even have "classroom" time to teach you about gear and stuff like that.

When I took the course, I was living in the NW but the arena was in the SE, I think it just depends on where they can get the ice time...it's run by the NCHL and goes about 4 times a year IIRC, so he could probably get one at a south arena eventually if he was that bothered

The class was split into two groups based loosely on address, typically a dark and light jersey side if there's enough people for two full teams. After the course, there's usually enough people for a team to enter into the next seasons league and you'll get a bunch of help with running and entering the team into the beginner tier of the NCHL league

I loved it and played with the team for 3 years, we added some friends/family/colleagues along the way but there was about 6 or 7 guys from the original course who were still with the team

Beer league is beer league though, there's always wankers and people who think it's "The Show". Not so much in the beginner league but the next tier up is shitty for it

Can't say enough good things about the Discover Hockey course though

It's harder to perfect hockey when you have a tiny dick and you're eventually going to have to shower with other dudes.

Ahaha I haven’t scored in I think 53 games going back to pre Covid lmao

But it’s good cardio and still fun. As long as you have fun right

And tucker hockey is good. I’m doing it again right now Sunday nights. You can drop in just email Candace it’s about $60 for drop in. I did it early on and took like an 8 year break in between. Had to send myself back when I realized I was doing the same old shit. Same old shit is okay when other teams suck but the league got way better so I had to go relearn the basics. I also did discovery hockey through nchl back in 2012. Ran some shinny for 5 years ish. But I know my role lol bottom pair Defense. Don’t throw muffins up the middle. Pucks in/out/on/trench work and pay league fees lol

I was thinking you and a couple Beyond people did the Discover Hockey/NCHL thing back in the day.

A lot of the beer leagues offer a "beginner" type team/options. Look around at NCHL, Winsport league, CAHL etc
