My issue is only why the rate is 50% higher than the base welfare/Aish/etc rate.

No offense but these are mostly people without kids/families - there's large numbers of people looking to hire breathing persons who can show up for work. Amazon, Walmart, grocery stores - all desperate for bodies, landscape companies are too...

Sorry but they're in the perfect position to take these jobs... Incentivizing staying home doesn't benefit anyone.

The fliberals are doing this for other reasons - usually for their own benefit. Incentivizing laziness is certainly the last thing we should be doing.

I believe there's also another component where volunteering will net you up to another $5K for the summer. So it's not really strictly incentivizing laziness.

Now there are a lot of students needed these 4 month's income to get thru next 2 semesters. You can't even whore yourself out under this pandemic and Stampede is most likely a no go.

I'm sure a lot of kids are still going to get the money and sit at home playing COD while chowing down Doritos and Mountain Dew. But there is always people that doesn't deserve handouts when one is given unless you spend more $ to police it.

So many students live at home these days. Definitely will have lotta kids sitting around gaming with spare change in their pocket when you see businesses struggle.

Because the federal government isn't going to base their funding models on the wide array of provincial assistance programs out there.

The amount they're giving is basically EI for a national average minimum wage job (in Alberta, BC, PEI and Ontario, it's slightly less than EI for a minimum wage job).

It's funny how many people in here are hating on kids staying home playing games when there's a ton of adults laid off sitting at home playing games on CERB/EI and thats just fine.

People need to stay the fuck home so this shit can pass and we can figure out how to reopen businesses slowly.

You know there is a difference lol.

If the students have to prove they have expenses they pay under their name, then sure. But if they are living rent free and have no expenses, then how it is the same as someone who takes CERB?

TIL being human means you are entitled to have everyone else give you money for no reason.

Yep. Otherwise, you'd be a dog, or cat. Or bird.

It would be pretty easy to prove anyways. What person has no expenses?

Meh. I'm not too stressed about it. Just goes to prove my point about why people shouldn't be given money for no reason, if anything.

Wait, I thought that rep was supposed to be positive. It is saying how the cost of living in Spain is so low
Too bad that person has no rep power or else it would be a green bar.

I'd be interested in hard numbers too, but my anecdotal experience from 2006-2011 was that everyone i knew in University had summer jobs of some sort. But then again, i was brought up in a poorer neighbourhood which naturally means most of my circle were also not well off and had to work if they wanted any semblance of a social life over summer.
    I can verify this.
It really was the semi-ghetto eh?

We're talking about students who can apparently survive the entire school year without a job but automatically qualify to receive $5k for the summer just 'cause here.

If anything, Spain is "broke-ass" because of it's socialist policies. Hate to see Canada heading in the same direction....

Some students only get through the school year with student loans. Anything they earn in the Spring/Summer helps to lessen that burden if possible, and cover the things that the loans can't. I won't argue that we shouldn't be giving money out to those who are just going to sit around and do nothing, doesn't matter if that is EI, CERB, CSEB, or what ever other acronym'd benefit there is out there. While you are correct that there are jobs out there, At minimum wage (15/hr) working standard part time (20 hrs/week) someone might make $1,200 before taxes. That pretty close to equal to the CSEB ($1,250). I would say that the majority of people on any benefit are also people that are more productive than that, and are searching for actual work in some way. Just like with all the other benefits there will be free-riders, that is how any support program goes.

Where I work right now, we normally have at least two positions filled by the Canada Summer Jobs, but the industry we are in is directly effected by not being able to gather. So we either find a way to turn those positions into something still meaningful to fill the CSJ requirements with the conditions we are in right now, or we drop the applications completely. Not every company has the luxury and ability to hire more CSJ applicants, so anyone who was originally looking for work in their field to grow their skills is SOL. You didn't learn to fly airplanes bagging groceries did you? A Mechanic doesn't learn how to fix a car picking orders from amazon, do they? No, they learn by being in the industry.

What we need to realize is that it's been a while since some of us have been to school, or been in the position that students are in right now. Just because you saw your friends partying and having their parents income support them does not mean that is the norm. Two of my jobs during the school year laid me off / ended contracts early because of this nonsense, so even the income that I consistently had as support disappeared.
