How fucking low are those downtown buildings? And this is an ice-jam flood right?

    yep.

We moved all our network gear into the second floor of our CO a couple of years back in anticipation of this.

I feel so bad for these people. Have a lot of friends there

I happens regularly in Fort Mac. In fact my parents and sister and I moved from there after our neighbourhood was wiped out from a similar flood in 1977. They just keep on building in flood plains. Even the flooding river in the photos look the same from then to now.

For sure, I feel bad, and I also have friends there, but this isn't some freak occurrence, I think spring ice-jams causing flooding is pretty normal for that end of downtown, isn't it?

EDIT: Took a look at the flood hazard mapping on https://maps.alberta.ca/FloodHazard/ and yeppers.

Makes you realize the seriously lack-luster performance of civic governments, when they know this a problem but let builders do their thing anyways.

And the rest of us have to pay for it.

Well, I think these areas have been built up for decades. The buildings are probably older than the flood mapping.

Is there any aerial photography of the ice jam? Ie does it extend from the highway 63 bridge east of syncrude and then all the way back to fort Mac?

McMurray Aviation has 55 photos on Facebook. I will let you look for them as I'm not linking FB here.

I wouldn't say regular. 77 was the last bad one, but other than that it's been pretty mediocre a couple times during breakup.

I'm actually in Fort Mac again now. It is hands down the wildest flood I've seen here in my 30 years I spent originally.

This is what I don't understand, why does every municipality seem to ignore historical floodplain data?

We're building a house in a newer subdivision right now, all high end homes, in essentially a former swamp. We had to put in 32 screw piles for the foundation, many didn't torque up until past 40 ft. WTF man. Lol

Because the developer can get the land, build, sell, and walk away long before there's any flooding issues.

It's desirable to be close to the river! Until it's not...

It appears I misunderstood how much of the city this effected and how much higher this is than the "normal" spring flooding that they see a few times a decade.

    From 2016:

Rebuilding Fort McMurray homes on flood plain a 'poor decision,' says hydrologist
    https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/edmon...gist-1.3793374

One of Canada's top hydrologists is criticizing a decision to allow people who lost their homes during the fire in Fort McMurray, Alta., to rebuild on a known flood plain.

John Pomeroy says it may seem compassionate to allow people in the Waterways subdivision to rebuild, but he stresses it really isn't.

That above pic is insane, it's like they built the damn town inside a natural waterway.

Why is the Municipality allowing it is the question.
