Sorry I thought you were implying that nuclear reactors pose a hazard in terms of radiation leaks into the river. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
But yes, there is - insane - (fisheries?) regulations with even putting back water into the stream, but (slightly) cleaner/warmer.
I always find it interesting how many people think the water is heated directly and then dumped out. For example not realizing there are multiple heat exchangers or the cooling ponds on the coal generators.

No did not mean to insinuate that at all. But it's hectic enough regulations to pull water from a river just for basic processes, then add the word nuclear anywhere in that application and you get government/public freak out. I imagine there must be regulations preventing a nuclear plant from ever putting anything back into a drinking water source if they have used it on their site.
A company I worked for trained the initial SWAT teams that were required for the Bruce Nuclear Power plant a few years after 9/11 (2004 ish). They told us there that the water that is heated in the plant systems there (IIRC it was used in cooling pumps/cycles/systems - I don't know much about how the reactors actually function) is frequently pumped into the nearby Lake Huron, often keeping it from freezing over even in very cold winters. This has had very positive effects for some wildlife in the area, and the tests never show anything radioactive or whatever. I agree Misterman, as soon as the words nuclear power are inserted into the convo, a lot of people freak out. IMO the new reactors mentioned already would be a great option for us in the West right now.
Ft Mcmurray sure has gotten fucked over since I left in 2009. Crash in oil prices/jobs/wages/etc. Fires that burn 1/4 of the city down, and screw everything up. Now floods from the ice jams again. What's next, swarms of locusts and the 4 horsemen of the apocalypse? Can't catch a break - I'm glad I got out during the end of a good housing price boom, and I don't miss the place, but I too have lots of friends there still and it sucks for them.
Anyone else see the articles about the mayor requesting that the DOND send CF18s with precision guided bombs to break up the ice flows? Sukoi fighter/bombers did it in Russia successfully before, but the engineers in Ft Mac say it won't work up there right now. Too bad, would have made for some great Youtube videos.
Not sure I'd trust CDN military to make a precision air strike but either way, it could solve the Fort Mac problem!

I say stupid shit all the time.
Medicine Hat tried bombing the river in 1951 but all it did was punch holes in the ice.
