Restaurants re-opening under same ownership and new theme is NOT relevant to covid. Happens far too often because restaurant people are super creative, but generally not good at business.
Probably because good business people don’t want to make low margins on high labor/stress businesses. I have a ton of respect for good restaurant owners because of how hard it is to keep a good ship running and how low the margins typically are. Owning a restaurant is only good if your a chef or if want to dedicate your life (or your kids lives) to the establishment. Even the popular franchises are a shit deal for an investor.

    Great to launder money though.

Any industry where half the new entrants are opening thier "dream business" is something you want to avoid, because you have to compete with people who will lose money to keep their businesses open another 6 months.

Mad respect for people who actually make money running a restaurant, and also mad respect for the dreamers who open new ones. I love restaurants, and I wish them all the best.

You realize you are talking to the guy who made his own furniture out of salad bowls right?

Wow. I cannot imagine the markup on their products and with their tiny locations, that seemed like a license to print money.

Step 1: order a bulk rail car of nonsense powder for $80/ton
Step 2: Put in generic plastic tubs but with really fancy labels.
Step 3: Sell for $80/lb to fat people, gym rats, insecure females and anyone else who thinks powder substitutes proper diet and exercise.

Definitely overpriced but many of their locations are in malls which are not cheap for rent.

So with a bunch of places going under ... anyone see any liquidation sales/auctions happening?

Shanks, both North & South locations are toast by the looks of things.
Every time I've been in a Shanks, service has been non existent, the food was average at best, and we were always one of the only tables in an otherwise empty place. I'm genuinely surprised it lasted this long, but maybe some of the other locations were more successful.

Pretty much my experience. Went there for a raptors playoff game and they were super short staffed (why? on a playoff game). Our waitress came by maybe twice in 3 hours. We would've drank way more but literally couldn't order any drinks the whole time.

Who was it that broke a tooth on the tip of the knife that was in their sandwich?

Shanks... so classy, loved getting drunk and playing arcade games with the worst fake ID ever back in the day

Spot on. Every time I've been in there have been for bachelor parties or big game nights (I.e. Hockey playoffs or UFC) and it's always dead. If I recall, their beer list was also junk - just Canadian, Kokanee, or Keiths at a premium. It just seemed like they didn't put any effort into anything.

Who needs a restaurant with high overhead.
There's literally a ghost kitchen that's a Chinese food place being run out of a house in my neighborhood. Lol
If I only knew what it was named.

Not quite bankruptcy, but Microsoft closing all physical retail locations.
