Lol good luck on Airbnb being anywhere close to being better than hotel industry. I had a travel ban to Japan and Airbnb took weeks and weeks to respond.
I am surprised by your situation. I had the same issue mid march, was a piece of cake.

Followed their instructions (have to inform host first), everything refunded, zero hassles.

But I also had a great experience with Air Canada, refunded my tickets completely, didn't try to give me a voucher, and I did NOT have travel insurance or anything, base econo tickets.

    Maybe I really lucked out?

As for Airbnb as a service, I really like it. Significant savings in Japan for our group of 4 guys, great locations. Hotels are quite expensive there.

I've also used Airbnb in Canada before. Zero problems. And compared to hotels in Canada, I've stayed at some of the nicer ones out west. Very unimpressed most of the time at $300-$400+ a night.

As for Airbnb as a service, I really like them. Used their services for years, mostly as a guest. Significant savings in Japan for our group of 4 guys, great locations. Hotels are quite expensive there.

Trust me man.. I used to love Airbnb for these perks. But the virus showed many new issues.

As a guest and a host, Airbnb could not answer these questions:

    1) What happens if guests are staying in my home with a quarantine in place?
    2) What happens if the guest has mandated quarantine for 2 weeks but has booking for less than 2 weeks?
    3) What happens if guest is COVID19 positive? Who will be responsible for professional cleaning?
    4) As a guest, can I refund if I am subject to a mandatory home quarantine (airbnb could not answer this back in late March, I assume theyve addressed this now)
    5) If previous guest was COVID19 positive, the next guest and cleaner maybe at risk. Who would be responsible for any issues?

Fuck AIRBNB. They were fucking unprofessional and had little sense of how to manage Hosts or Guests.

Obvious answer to all the questions is the host is responsible. Just like a hotel would eat those costs.

But that isn’t a particularly convenient answer.

Lucked out imo. I had a friend who had to call 4x and only got a 24month credit.

Of course AC doesn't wanna give refunds, bleeding cash, laying off 50% of work staff, they are waiting for a bailout too.

Not quite true. Do you allow your guest to stay 14 days due to legal quarantine when the guest paid for 7 days? Theres a lot of complicated situations where hotels have the luxury to offer longer duration. Airbnb cannot extend stays if there are other bookings in place.

Looks like the airlines are starting to go one by one
Why hasnt someone like Alitalia (complete debacle and loss maker) gone down in flames yet? Because it was nationalized. Maybe thats next for many.
