I've been tipping heavily at my barbers since they reopened.

This is another one that's not exactly true from the headline. At the time Netflix was just a money losing DVD mailing rental business. That's what was being offered for sale to Blockbuster. Streaming wasn't even on the radar, and wasn't introduced until 10 years later. If the sale went through, the CEO would've cashed out, and built his streaming company outside of Blockbuster, and Blockbuster would be still be around making $50m a year with DVD by mail.
I think Netflix ruined BB's late fees racket and started its downfall.

And blockbuster was given the opportunity to buy Netflix, just missed opportunities by people not looking at the future
BlockBuster is also ahead of its time. Teamed up with Enron (yes that Enron) Broadband Service and started delivering VOD in 1999.

This could have been easily switched to streaming.

Netflix is the right tech at the right time.

Yup, I’m doing $10 tip instead of my old usual $5. It ain’t much especially since I’m cutting my hair less often now (every 4 weeks instead of 3) but he was really appreciative.

Just got my haircut for the first time in 4 months and Im going to put barbers on the watchlist - the owner said due to Covid19 there are no special events which they rely on to keep their type of business afloat, meaning no grad, no stampede, no fathers day, not many weddings etc. He is hoping that school resumes back at school in September and people come in for that or he said that their industry is going to be really in a bind.
To add to this, my wife called the other day to book a full meal deal (cut, colour, whatever else women do to their hair) and the first available time was the end of July! I thought they were just crazy busy (good for the economy) but it turns out that it's a client management issue, only one person at a time instead of the three or four that the girls would be working on at the same time.

Just a PSA that same goes for lab tests. Booking only and no more drop in, less spots available for social distancing. So if you need one done, book ahead.

The thing with salons and barber shops, they're literally one of the lowest start up capital businesses. Can close down and restart with one CERB cheque.
They'll go and come back quickly.

Odd, I wonder what a decent quality barber/stylist chair is worth? Good scissors will easily run $100-200 and they'll have several sets. Clippers, couple hundred there. Hair blowers/driers aren't cheap either. Need a station with a mirror, proper electricity as well plus a washing sink somewhere. Gonna need a washer and drier on site as well - hell, there's one CERB cheque right there. I suspect a salon or barber shop with 3-4 chairs is going to cost considerably more than $2,000 to set up.

Ok, I was making a point that is a low barrier. This is why lots of people do it out of their home.

Some might find this interesting. I love this show.

This is what he means by low barrier if you don't want to spend on capitals.

Oceana is still open it looks like.

Hmm, and I wonder how many people cut their own hair due to Covid and realized they are going to be doing that moving forward, at least for the next little while.

It could just be my perception, but it seems to me that most of the restaurants that are going under did nothing to try and keep business moving during the peak of the quarantine. Lots of restaurants got creative, simplified menus, advertised on social media, set up in house delivery or joined DD/Skip, etc. and some had so much business they couldn't keep up with online orders. If your food is good enough and you provide an easy means to pick it up or have it delivered, people will go out of their way to get it.

Much easier for mid to low grade food than fine dining.

Like steak, if I have to pay $50 for Skip to deliver one that's kinda cold by the time it gets here, I may as well fire up my grill and DIY.

Some dishes are meant to be enjoyed within minutes leaving kitchen piping hot and not to be delivered 20-30mins later. Heck, I still prefer Wakado onsite instead of take out but I tolerate it if that's the only way to get those tasty Chasiu.
