    Default Downtime Skill-Building

I know I'm not the only unemployed bum on the board. Something I've been working on is spending time being productive by learning new skills. It's given me a reason to get up and see progress on something which I feel is a critical component to keeping negativity at bay.

I signed up for DataCamp and have been working through some SQL stuff. 'Data Science' seems all the rage these days so I think having even a bit of knowledge about it will interest some employers. I toy with learning some Python or R but each seems very specific to which employer and from what I've gathered, it's challenging to bring the skills from R to Python, or visa versa.

Doing a bit of read on investing terminology, seems like a good life-skill anyways.

My MSc. research was condensed into a manuscript and has been accepted for publication in a journal

Friend of mine is starting to learn French in the event something out-east pops up.

What are you guys working on?

I found R and Python to be similar enough to adapt relatively quickly. Python for engineers and R for data scientists. Both are great in my opinion. What's your MSc. in?
I am learning poker and how to make authentic beyond-acceptable fried rice.

I'm reading up for my certification but might hold off on it since the company isn't in a reimbursing mood at the moment.

And podcasting to enhancing my speaking skills.

My work is in evaluation and research data so my bread and butter is SPSS, but I've been looking at getting Power BI under my belt.

Going down the data scientist route is an option but I really have no interest in coding R or Python.

This is awesome, looks like you are making the most of this!

I did the data camp stuff for Python, really enjoying it, and the free week (in spite of it being pretty reasonable price-wise), has pushed me to try to get 4 modules done.

I was just thinking about this and I don't know if I'm acquiring any specific skill but it has made me think a lot about how to move the biz forward. I spend most of my time consuming business/investing type content.

I've been expanding outside of my career and really started to dial into woodworking more. I am currently doing a ton of tutorials for Fusion 360 and other CAD design software's. With that I am also learning about tool paths and end mill choices for CNCing wood. Hoping to turn this into a bit of a side gig with my wife. Not enough to replace my day job but if I could pay every third or fourth mortgage payment it would be cool. Plus learning a 3D CAD program has been something I've wanted to do for a while.

I'm not ashamed to say I have not even attempted to better myself during this time. Between playing schoolteacher, working from home, and safeguarding my mental health I have found myself much busier than usual. Haven't even found time for TV or movies yet.

That is perfectly acceptable. Keep role-playing away.

Camping reservation bot could be a reasonably profitable business. You should take pre-orders for a higher fee too.

Are you saying that you would like to invest in my start-up? I have no relevant skill set but have been referred to as a "quick learner".

Been teaching myself windsurfing. Learning a lot about wind, drag and lift and how to manipulate with a sail. Shits harder than it looks!

I've just been spending some time reading - been trying to read a book every week or two. Taking advantage of the fact that there's not many TV shows going on and no sports to catch up on that.

Data science is all the rave these days. I think Power BI was listed above, but Tableau is also offering a free trial right now (and includes their learning modules).
