    Default MY PC wont start

My PC wont reboot. Goes into auto repair mode and cant move past.

Preparing Auto Repair > Diagnosing your PC > Auto repair cant repair your PC see log file XXXXXX

Through advanced options I was finally able to get into it by selecting Early Malware detection.

I went to the PC lox referenced above and found the following:

Startup Repair diagnosis and repair log
    ---------------------------
    Number of repair attempts: 1

    Session details
    ---------------------------
    System Disk = \Device\Harddisk1
    Windows directory = D:\WINDOWS
    AutoChk Run = 0
Number of root causes = 0

    Test Performed:
    ---------------------------
    Name: Check for updates
Result: Completed successfully. Error code = 0x0
    Time taken = 0 ms

    Test Performed:
    ---------------------------
    Name: System disk test
Result: Completed successfully. Error code = 0x0
    Time taken = 0 ms

    Test Performed:
    ---------------------------
    Name: Disk failure diagnosis
Result: Completed successfully. Error code = 0x0
    Time taken = 0 ms

    Test Performed:
    ---------------------------
    Name: Disk metadata test
Result: Completed successfully. Error code = 0x32
    Time taken = 16 ms

    ---------------------------

Anyone got any suggestions as its all greek to me?

    Thanks

    Couple of reasons:

    - failed/failing disk (most likely - esp with laptops and the cheap shit drives I see failing all the time)
    - bad Windows update (seen a few times)
    - caused by bugs (rare these days)

You are looking at a proper repair (about 1 hour) or a clean Windows reinstallation (assuming the drive is not toast)- I can reference some tech geek sites though if you want to attempt yourself. Hope you have the data backed up.

It's a desktop, not sure that matters it's a newer ssd drive. I'm going to backup all data again. How do you know if the drive is failing? I'd welcome your links too.

    Thanks

    Samsung SSD by chance?

If so you can use their Magician tool (once Windows is fixed) to check out the drive status - although I have seen issues where the drive tool reports that all is well too.

Try the response marked 'answer' in the forum link here - manually rebuilding the BCD>

Ok Samsung magician said health was good, I can post a screenshot when the other stuff is done as I am currently running the scans.

The rebuild BCD and fixmbr worked.

You will have to unlock the bootloader for this - temporarily - in BIOS (secure boot -> unsecure boot).

It could be esc, del, f2, f8, f10 - depends on your system.

If you have an ASUS board, you will have to choose "advanced mode" BIOS in the top right corner.

Also it could be sign of a bad ssd - in cases like yours I take the SSD (even if shows OK in the OEM tool) and run a torture test/fill up the drive and then read back the data for errors. Sometimes the drive also slows down to a crawl on a speed test for R/W.

Their RMA process is fucked - let me know if you want to go down that road and I can direct to the proper channels.

OK so I ran the steps in the link you provided:

    bootrec.exe /rebuildbcd > operation completed successfully
    bootrec.exe /fixmbr > operation completed successfully
    bootrec.exe /fixboot > access is denied

I also ran the chkdsk command and both of my drives checked ok

Re secureboot changes I cant do that on my PC (i think its too old) it's a Dell Studio 540 from 09 hahaha

Can still only get PC to reboot using the early malware detection (#8) option.

    Thoughts??

Ugh, was the system working completely fine before the boot failure?

You are looking at a partition rebuild then:

yes it was although sometimes it would seem to freeze up.

Seeing as I can access it right now I have a 2TB Seagate backup drive. Should I just back everything up and then wipe it clean?

    Im such a newb lol.

Or given that its 11 years old should I just get a new tower from MEx? Its just for surfing the web and email etc no gaming anymore thats all on consoles.

    Thoughts? Suggestions?

Nah, keep the tower - for basic apps like that its not worth buying a new rig.

Wipe the drive (after data copy) and reinstall W10 from scratch.

If the drive has issues again soon, RMA the thing.

Weird that it is seeing windows as a D:\ directory. has this always been the case? I have had an issue in the past where this has happened.

    Try this.

Yea thats not right (SSD is cooked) - unless you are using a super slow USB connection.
