    Default Home Network Question

I'm not quite sure what's going on with my home network. I'm with Shaw, on the 600 plan and my home network was set up with the Shaw modem in bridge mode, then to a Netgear Nighthawk AC1750 (basement), then to a gigabit switch (basement), then to an Asus RT-AC86U which has been running the wifi in my house.

I would get into a state every few days where my wifi would connect but be without internet. With the Netgear router in the basement, on the same power bar as the modem, I would reset both by turning on and off the power bar. The internet would come back. I never got very good speeds, around 100mbps on wireless and say 225mbps on hardwired through the Asus router (upstairs).

I called Shaw a couple days ago and they blamed the 3rd party router and said everything would be great if I used the Shaw router and if they put it into unbridged mode. Fair enough, so essentially this cuts the Netgear router out, and now on my hardwired connections I get 600mbps. On my wifi I get around 65mbps on my Asus wifi. UNTIL I log into the Shaw wifi, now getting up to 150mbps, and then re-logging into the Asus one, its showing up to 600mbps! Why is that? Why do I have to log into the Shaw one, then back into the Asus one to get good wireless speeds? Its driving me crazy! These speeds are from both fast.com and shaw speedtest.

Make sure any extra wireless access points are set to access point mode specifically or else your going to get into some funky network addressing.

Yea sounds like you went from a double to a triple NAT situation ....

    What you should be doing:

shaw modem (bridge mode) -> netgear (DHCP/lan/gateway) -> asus (WAP only, no other functions - ie everything else disabled)

Well if you keep resetting the units all the time, its only going to manifest itself every few days .... haha.

Ok thanks for the responses, I can see that this is definitely beyond what I would have been able to figure out alone. Does it matter that my desktop is hardwired from the asus? Are there any companies that can help me with this? I never quite understood networks.

I changed this to access point, but I now cannot log into the router from my desktop

Note the part in yellow. When you put in AP mode, you need the tool to tell you what IP its using, or a scanner if you know your network well.

It should get a dhcp address from your net gear.
