Default Best router for mainly wired usage?

Looking to replace my Nighthawk R7000. It's 5+ years old now and starting to give me some issues like disconnecting from my work laptop and seems to get super hot.

Most my devices are wired like my PC and consoles. I just have my cellphone, switch and work laptop wireless.

What's the best router to get these days or should I just use my Telus modem/router? I don't really need range as I'm in a condo. Around $200 or less.

No clue about new routers but I also have R7000. 6years and counting now.

I had many issues after it updated itself. Took me a few months to realize the cause. I rolled back the firmware and it's been smooth sailing for a while now.

    Interesting, to which fw?

It's been mostly good for me too. Though I was on one of the latest versions and just updated to the newest one yesterday. Got a disconnect this morning for a few seconds on my laptop though.

I just went through this exercise myself in the last week. I'm also wired only (rely on Unifi for wireless) and needed a router that gave me some extra features. VPN with selective routing for my media streaming devices, parental controls/scheduling, multiple WAN support (when the day FTTH actually shows up here), DPI, QOS, and of course ability to push 1gig of data reliably.

I see you have the AC86U in your list, there's an AC66U B1 which is the exact same router except with AC1750 vs AC2900. Since you're wired anyways, save some money there. That's what I ended up picking up at MemEx.

It's supported by the AsusWRT Merlin Firmware which adds a few cool features to the stock firmware, and is regularly updated whenever Asus releases new AsusWRT firmware.

Tested it this weekend, running 650mbps of throughout, 4 OpenVPN connections that selectively routed to my 4 different Apple TV's, and no issues. 70% CPU on core 1, and 20% CPU on core 2.

Cheap and does the job perfectly. The AX3000 bumps processor up to 3 cores and more speed per core, but for a simple use case don't really see the need.

I'm really impressed at how well Asus routers handle some of these non trivial tasks. I looked at Unifi USG and some Cisco routers and it's pulling hair trying to accomplish some of these things, such as selective VPN routing.

Yeah, looks like that's the stable one, so I'm going to try that first.

Thanks for the info rage. Too bad they don't have the B1 on amazon. I have $100 credit I can use.

Would you get the Asus 86 or Netgear AX3000 if you had to? Selective VPN routing seems cool if I need to use it as I do have expressvpn.

Though I could just get the B1 from mem express if this firmware doesn't work and use credit on something else.

This, I'm running an AC66U B1 strictly for routing for years and never had any problem, getting Shaw full speed.
    I have an AC86U + AC66U B1 AiMesh for wifi.

Bought a couple of these USB fans when they were still in stock and using them to keep the routers cool, usually the hardware are running 50-70C, with fans they are running 5-10C cooler.

If you are cheap and not into ultra fast networking (eg. no gaming, file movements), just adjust/tweak the configuration on your Telus router and use it in the condo.

I'd have no use for any more power. I mean it's got gigabit ports, not going to get any faster to use more CPU.
