Pretty sure that Globalstar(SPOT) uses the same satellites (GEO) that the XM radio ones use. Anyone who has used sat radio knows that when you get near a south-facing slope, it just won't work. With Iridium (LEO) the worst-case scenario is you are waiting a few minutes for a satellite to travel above you for your message to send. Id rather wait a few minutes than not being able to send anything at all with SPOT. Where we snowmobile, if you were stranded in a creek it would take hours if not days to hike up a slope in waist-deep powder.

If you are in the mid of Saskatchewan, on the water, etc GEO they may be a better option, if you are in the mountains LEO all the way

Hmm, that zoleo subscription sounds like a bitch. $25 activation plus $25/mon for minimum 2 months. So for me, that's $100/yr. Certainly eats up some of the cost advantage of rhe cheaper device.

The Garmin subscriptions are $30 activation plus $20/mo, so $90/yr if I used the same 3 months, but I could use 2 months if that suited.

I hate subscription fees or monthly costs. They just annoy me so darned much.

Looked into renting one of these for when you need it? I thought UofC rented them out. They used to rent sat phones too.

Bivystick wins if you only use it a few months a year, 18 bucks a mo. Use it 3 months cancel it. Start it again the next year. The not having activation fees makes a big difference.

how often are you that far in the sticks? 20 bucks plus usage fees doesn't sound that bad to me?

Those costs are /day, so if you were to pick it up for a 3 day weekend or two that adds up quick.

My personal use-case is probably not typical. I have two 7 day trips planned this summer, where I'd make real use of the device for less than half the days. So, renting, with an extra day on one end of each trip, I'd be close to the cost of buying one.
I feel like I'm either talking myself into the zoleo, or out of the entire concept. I can't tell which. Wonder what the resale market is like....

Fair enough, wonder if there is anyone else who rents them.

This really seems like an ideal rental case ( maybe beyond should group buy a couple lol )

Tell ya what, if I buy one, I'll rent it to you fools for $50/week when it's not being used.

Did you end up buying one? Good info in this thread on Iridium vs Globalstar networks. When is a handheld Starlink unit going to show up?

I ended up being cheap and didn't buy anything.
