    Default Maya Riviera in October

Heading there for a wedding mid October, staying at the Grand Serenis ive never been this way. Are there any tips for excursions or anything else I should know?

My buddy wants to venture out to Playa Del Carmen if we can, any tips on doing that or is that not really recommended anymore leaving the resort?

You can go to town, no issues, just don't be drunk idiots, and get home before it's late. Have your 3am puking-drink shenanigans at the resort.

Mexico towns like that are about as dangerous as a city like LA or NY, which is to say, moderately.

Ya we are only planning on going through the day. I'm not about to pay for booze when it's free at the resort lol

I haven't been to Mexico since before the pandemic, but the safety rules are pretty commonsense. I enjoy getting out to the restaurants in town. I find even the mid-tier ones have pretty good food and a nice atmosphere.
It's helpful if you have someone who speaks enough spanish to at least negotiate your taxi fare or order dinner in Spanish. If you find a restaurant where nobody speaks English, that's usually a good sign for value and food quality.

Now you got me thinking about a trip, I do have lots of WJ points to use up . . .

Tulum is worth seeing...once. I always try to book some cenote swimming when I'm down there.

I haven't been back to Mexico in a while so all my info is about 10 years old.

I remember Playa del Carmen is a nice beach and laid back town. Mayan Riviera is close to a few Mayan ruins, mainly Chichen Itza and Coba. So if that's your thing its a good day tour from the hotel. The tour will probably include a dip in a cenote also which is pretty cool and refreshing after sweating your ass off at Chichen Itza.

the cenote swimming is awesome! Watched my kid rappel down into the water at the one we went to...

Pre covid when in Mexico we have wandered the towns at 3 am. Hit up the casinos and found cabs back to the resort. Never had any issues but now Playa Del Carmen seems like a war zone.

I'd probably want to be in a larger group if bar hopping or wandering the town lage at night.

Xel-Há/X-caret might be worth checking out if you're with kids.

If you are in Cancun town, the Mayan ruins on the resort strip are actually worth it for kids. Nearly free, take the city bus to the south end near the public beach.

I've found the best way to experience Mexico is by getting off your wallet and going to Hawaii instead.

Playa del Carmen is awesome. I recommend the night life there as there is something for everyone. Its inexpensive as well compared to places like Los Cabo

Good resort. Playa is nice, 5th ave shopping.

Don’t go more than two blocks off 5th - will be a bad day.

Not much to do in Playa but walk around and get harassed by flea market sellers. There's a few good taco joints there, El Fogon is worth stopping at. You can hangout later and hit up Coco Bongos if you're into that. It's usually a good time.

Akumal Monkey "Sanctuary", is just another zoo with Monkeys in cages. Not at all what they advertise. But if you like monkeys and aren't butthurt about the captivity thing, it's an alright excursion.
