If you wanna relive your youth with something modded a Toyota 86 with a turbo kit and some basic upgrades (10k) makes for a pretty fun car and very tail happy.

Could get a Cayman S / Audi RS5 / M2 or M3 / C63 can all be had used in that range. Theres a used RC-F for 40k or maybe a older Vette?

    proper petrol heads
Proper petrol heads don't buy something, they build something. So a $30k car with $20k in mods will get you a very sporty car.

Edit, this isn't a new thing either, a 1998 Supra Turbo doesn't even meet your HP criteria, and was over $70K (in today's dollars)

    A 2003 S2000, again doesn't meet HP criteria, and was $60k

A 2008 M3 does meet your HP, but was $85k

Miata? Need some nice curvy mountain roads to enjoy it tho. I guess that falls under the BRZ/FT86 as gutless but fun car. And a loaded one is almost $50K.

It is insane, the collector bubble has extended far beyond Porsche's to every low KM, desirable drivers car it seems.

Cadillac ATS-V would be a contender. Highly underrated, lots of power, great handling and you can get it with a manual.

I also can't see Shak building a car unless he was paying a shop to do it for him.

Would the Q60 Red Sport would fit the bill, or is it not a sports car? Haha.

Toyota builds that OEM too. With full warranty. They call it the Supra.

Everything i've read about that car from enthusiasts suggests it is not a drivers car, does not handle well at all when pushed.

OP, I'm also looking at the same budget for a potential 370z replacement.. still torn on whether to mod this thing or get something better out of the box. 45k for a new 1SS 1LE is pretty fucking tempting, I just wish the car looked better and had a better interior.

Seems like analog pre-nanny cars from 90s and 2000s are coming up. Given Gen X'er is now the one with disposable cash and about/starting to retire. Make sense.

I test drove one a year or 2 ago. That's spot on. Terrible turn in, light understeer nearing limit, massive understeer at the limit. Just dead coming out of the corners. Then there's the brakes, it's totally undersized for the power. Does not want to stop when pushing hard.

It reminded me of older AMGs before they cared about handling. All about straight line. It's great bang for the buck if straight line is all you're looking for.

Boomers haven’t retired yet, one step at a time.

I guess I should have prefaced by saying, when I say 'sports cars', I sorta mean a sporty looking car - that is coupe. Doesn't have to be a die hard V8 beast. Accordingly, I would include the Q60 in that category (sport/luxury cars under $50K), however as stated above, it doesn't quite drive as nice. It is a nice looking vehicle though. Another option would be a S5. Perhaps a year or two older. Not your die hard sports car again but as someone mentioned it's that sporty/luxury AWD that can be a solid option.

Don't know much about Cadillac's - went online and don't see an ATS-V. Have they stopped making those? In fact, there's any coupe on their site anymore.

TTRS is definitely a good option - I personally don't like the look of them but it's definitely a contender for a solid sports cars under $50K.

I’ve got a nicely modified TTRS around 500hp. One of the most fun cars I’ve owned/modified.

    110,000km, $42k.

Shak, what about a used RS5?

If we expanded your parameters to up to 5 years old, I've seen some that are between $35k and $50k

I'm surprised at how cheap the one in Calgary is but I don't know much about the RS models.

    - Used Golf R ($30k) and very minimal mods (tune) and you'd still have enough left over for some red wheels. Win.
