I suppose so, its inline with the new 980 PRO specs though (980 PRO being 6500/5000 speeds) ... but if the price is near the 970 PRO then I guess it would be a 500$ drive. I missed the 5.5gbps portion, I thought that spoke to some kinda data transfer within the drive, not necessarily hard drive speeds.
My understanding is it's the hard drive speed, but I guess nobody has all the info yet. Regardless, it looks to be a pretty powerful unit. To build a PS5 into a PC would cost around $2500 at today's prices so the value is incredible.

I'm told by someone who works in the industry that the PS5 data management is a game changer. It's not just a way to get data to load faster, but it allows for the video card to be much more optimized to the environments, etc. It allows them to store vertex positions as textures or something?

My understanding is that it basically makes it so they are no longer bottle-necked by RAM (or at least not nearly as bad), so you can play games with cinema-quality graphics like pheoxs' above post showcasing the Unreal 5 engine. That was a big limitation in previous units apparently.

I think so, but they have figured out how to use the high speed as a way to improve overall graphics, including gemotry and polygons.

Let's start with the five main tenants that shaped the PlayStation 5's SSD:

    Boots in a second
    No load screens
    Ultra high-speed streaming
    De-duplicate game data
    No long patch installs

SSD were dirt cheap last year. Basic Samsung 860 evo 256G was $45, SSDs have gone up quite a bit in the last few months.

This is apparently not a 'normal' SSD, it is a proprietary (probably PCI 4.0) with 5.5 GB/s transfer speeds. At retail, it would probably cost around 2-3X that of a basic 1TB NVMe SSD most people have in their PCs.

I'm still skeptical, as this is all going to be from a best case scenario perspective. You simply can't guarantee every game will have access to this drive unless you only play a handful of games on the core drive. That number will keep dropping as games get bigger and bigger. Look at the footprint of COD Warzone. It ain't getting better. There's no guarantee that every PS5 owner is going to shell out for $$$ external drive upgrades to guarantee this performance, and no confirmation if external additional storage has this performance capability.

Game developers can't design for the exception, so the exception loses out.

GT5 was the only reason I got a PS3. Played it a handful of times. Skipped the PS4. Do I get a PS5 for GT7? haha, maybe I will wait for the PS5 Slim with flipstah and leverage a bonus redemption event at Shoppers in 2025.

I have 33 months left on my Game Pass Ultimate sub, guess I am bought into the MS ecosystem. lol.

The more interesting thing I read in there is that this fast SSD actually helps to mitigate game bloat but not needing assets to be duplicated across the drive to increase performance.

    So that’s a factor too.

Cod is still going to be 200+ gb though

I think that the 825gb is going to fill up a lot faster than people are thinking. At least you can add in an nvme drive but will it even be able to play games off since it would be slower than the normal ssd.

yea, "instant patch" doesn't take account download times either haha.

    I have 5TB and it's 70% full. 1GB surely won't cut it.

Yea I have a 3 TB external strapped to my Xbox and I’m starting to push being full after what? 10 years.

But games are only getting bigger.

Gonna be pricey shit if I need a 3TB+ exotic ssd

Still have a 1TB strapped to an old Xbox 360. Hasn't been turned on in over a year.

The Ratchet and Clank demo really shows the PS5's power. The fact there is no loading between worlds is impressive. Haven't bought an Xbox since the original came out, and will probably stick with PS again. I just hope they give it enough storage options. I haven't bought a physical game in a long time, the DL is too convenient.

Physical games still require downloads. Physical sales are essentially just licenses in a box these days.

Oh? shows what I know lol. I don't think I've bought a physical game since the PS3. I prefer the PS exclusive titles to Xbox aside from Halo series.
