30% of civilian pilots in Pakistan are unlicensed. 262 did not take the exam themselves.
We're now learning this as the may Karachi crash apparently will point to unlicensed pilots.

“PIA has grounded all its pilots who hold fake licenses, effective immediately.”
So wait, they knew they were fake? Or it was obvious enough that they could do this? What the actual fuck.

Why the hurry to ground the pilots with fake licenses? Seems like an overreaction.

I at least feel safe knowing that Alberta doesn't allow countries teeming with corruption like this to perform engineering services at rock bottom prices on pressure vessels containing explosive & poisonous materials, piping stress analysis or bridges. Its not a PIA thing, or just a Pak thing - this shit happens all over the world. Just way less so in the developed countries. Ask a Russian cargo pilot in Africa for his 'official papers' and see where that gets you.
Many of these kinds of places hire based on WHO you know (or are related to) rather than WHAT you know, or discriminate against those of a different ethnic background, or religious for eg.
Merit means fuck all and this is the end result.
On the flip side, you can have full licensed and qualified pilots fly a perfectly fine, 200 million $$ ship (Asiana 777) into the ground, on a clear calm day in SanFran - because their company forbid hand flying training and they were forced to perform a manual (visual) approach.

Imagine their doctors are just as qualified.
Maybe check their papers before they ask to examine your prostate.

Oh, for sure. It's also rampant in China and India. That's where companies like Fluor and Worley mandate that a minimum of 40% of the ENGINEERING hours be performed for a massive hydrocarbon project that will end up wherever an Alberta is...This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. So we can save Royal Dutch Shell and ExxonMobil hundreds of thousands of dollars... That will evaporate ten-fold in construction delays and confusion.

Thanks for the 14 years of LOLs. Govern yourselves accordingly and avoid uppercut reactions!

But they weren't flying atr's with passengers. These are airline pilots who aren't qualified.
I don't know how many people work in IT here...but it's a well known joke that bunch of CCIEs are from that part of the world.....and they def didn't write their exams This is not at all surprising, although just a bit...given that this is a more life and death situation vs faking being a cisco expert.

Saw the prelim report from the Karachi crash. Probably the worst case of pilot error/incompetence in commercial aviation crash history?
It's hard to understand what was happening in that cockpit. As I was going through it, I was thinking either drunk, on drugs, but I guess if one wasn't even a real pilot maybe that's the explanation. The captain did have something like 17,000 hours, so that still doesn't add up...
Current government was trying to fire them for long time but union and opposition political party were blocking them. Their excuse was hands on experience is more important than a piece of paper
To be a Cisco expert, you need the ethernet to 9-pin adaptor to program all the old switches
The largest nickel miner (Norilsk) in Russia just had an absolutely ridiculously huge diesel spill. Completely overlooked because of Covid.
Never been much on qualifications. Every Chinese person in the USA does not meet the requirements to enter the door at NASA - so yeah.

Jesus. Can’t say as I’m surprised though. In that part of the world corruption runs rampant.
...
Im actually surprised there arent more crashes like this - given the deplorable aviation culture in many of these places (not just Pak).
I dare say a lot of our countries commercial pilots aren't properly qualified either. Maybe legally, but not practically. Every company has significantly dropped their required flight hours in the last decade. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
