    Default Restoring 1993 Mazda Miata

Somehow I’ve decided to purchase this car to keep it in the family. Cleaned it up this weekend, and surprised how nice the condition is for a 27 year old car. My FIL never winter drove it, and kept it garages all these years. Barely any sun fading, except for the ashtray. The soft top is immaculate. Since there’s not many unmolested NA miatas left, I’m going to try and restore this car to factory new condition. First things first, gotta find OEM 7 spoke 14” wheels with the proper flame in circle center caps to replace the vintage ricer American Racing wheels. That’s the only thing not OEM with the car. No clue where the originals went.

    Anyways here’s the starting point.

@gpomp is settling me his set of 14's. Mazda Miata Restoration program parts are available in Canada and I sourced the period correct center caps, which hilariously enough costs more than the damn wheels lol. Going to refinish the wheels and throw on some 14" tires and store them in the basement while I find some better looking 15's for DD.

Also got a new ashtray, it's the only interior part that's really worn out for some bizarre reason. Again thru the restoration program.

I can't find new carpet floor mats. Mine are pretty beat, and I'd love to find a new set or 2. @legendboy if you can ask your neighbor if they know where to source them, that'd be great. Thanks! Mazda dealer told me to randomly call dealers throughout Canada, he suspects there might be a set sitting in a back room somewhere. Might do that on a day off this week and hope to get lucky.

Sent the 14" wheels for refinishing today. 92-93 specific center caps arrived so sending one to the refinisher to make sure it matches.

First piece that needs replacement is the ashtray. No clue why it worn out completely while the rest of the interior is in 8/10 shape.

Found the convertible top cover cleaning out the trunk. Covered in 20 years of dirt. Cleaned it up and looks not bad!

Man, this is so awesome. NA's have always been my favourite Miata even after all these years. If I had a second parking stall, I'm almost certain I would have gotten one years ago. I still check every few years to see what's out there haha! I can't believe what people are still asking for them.

Yea the asking price is just nuts. I'm trying to source a hard top, and was told to find and buy a car with hard top, then sell the car. There are a lot of shit boxes out there asking $10k. Ridiculous.

Heh, I was going to post precisely the same sentiment. Of all the cars I've "almost" bought through the years, I think not owning a first gen (or any gen) Miata is my biggest regret in that department. I too love the first gen/NA, but I would strongly consider buying a Mazdaspeed Miata if I found one right now in good condition - the only one recently I've seen in Canada is in Ontario, had 250k km, and was pretty ratty.

The newest Miata also is a great, great car, the missus loved it when we test drove both the soft top and the hard top RF. Bit of a tight fit on the drivers side I found, but nothing that'd keep me from driving either. I was really impressed with the cost/value/fun ratio.

Nice little Miata there Rage2, excellent interior - and everything else - condition, plus the bonus of it being a family car, which is something cool, and important IMO. My aunt has a Fiero GT I'd love to keep in the family myself someday, she's in her mid 70s and still drives it. (https://i.imgur.com/kjB6wWQ.jpg)

My Youtube car channel subscription feeds this last couple weeks had a good 1/2 dozen vids of various channels boosting a lot of 3rd gen Miatas, mostly supercharging.

I hope you keep updating this thread Rage, really interesting.

Saw your car leaving crowfoot late afternoon. Car looking mint!
The prices for Miatas are insane. I had a clean 2002 black Miata LS with only 65k kms that I sold last year. I could have got more if I sold this year instead.

Thanks guys. It’s definitely a plus to have such a great starting point. Let’s me spend money on making it perfect instead of just fixing stuff. I’m going to try and go OCD perfectionist on her. The dash and center console is pretty much perfect now. Seat belt buckles are both in rough shape, probably cheaper to get replacements than to try and fix them since it’s on the restoration parts list. The biggest work are the scuffs on the leather seats that’ll need some professional restoration work.

Still undecided on body work. On one hand it would be nice to keep as much original paint as possible, but at 180k kms I doubt keeping original paint is going to be a big deal. There are a lot of scuffs, and according to @gpomp unknown issues on the passenger door, so I might just to hell with it, repair any bad repair jobs, and repaint the entire car. The front hit a deer early on in its life 20 years ago, the repairs have held up well, with no signs of issues where things were repaired.

Engine wise, runs strong, but there’s the dreaded RMS leak. It’s not bad, but bad enough that I don’t like it. There’s the smell of coolant as well, so will have to go through and plug all the mechanical leaks before doing an engine detail. Clutch is fine, but if I’m doing RMS might as well throw in a new flywheel and clutch anyways. Mechanically it feels tight. While it’s got 180k kms, it’s literally all highway miles living out in caribou BC all it’s life.

Lots of work over the next year, will just try to enjoy the car as much as possible this year before some of the major work.

Is there aftermarket hardtop option like Spoon hardtop for the S2000.

This is awesome. And the resto OEM parts is equally awesome. Too bad all the manufactures don’t do that.

There are, but that defeats the purpose of this project haha.

Best thing about this project is that if rage2 decides to sell one day, there will be many at the door waiting to buy and he will get back all his $ spent and maybe more.
I'm jealous because I've always wanted a near mint NA Miata!

My SO's father has a minty NA Miata in red with a black interior. Driven rarely, has 95 percent original part (late 90's radio head unit). They have been off and on trying to sell it for years. Personally think they are asking too much even though it has less than 100k. Unfortunately is has steelies with fab caps. I'll admit, eventually I want to make an offer on it and ad some nicer alloys to it and then just leave everything else stock, maybe find the original radio

Are there speakers in the headrests or is that just detail?

Pretty sure that’s the optional speaker headrests.
