Default Recommendations on someone to replace 4runner head gaskets

So the girlfriend has a 2005 4runner with the v6 1GR-FE. Apparently there are a few years of this thing where head gasket failures, that start with cylinder 6 misfires, are pretty common as they get older. She had a shop do leakdown test and test coolant and say it is indeed a head gasket issue. This shop has been good to her, and seemed pretty straight on what they would charge and also that for the cost it might be better to look at other options.

At any rate, as one of the options we're looking at, wondering if guys would have recommendations on decent mechanics that could change the head gaskets. Backyard guys with good rep are fine with me. If the cost is reasonable, would want to get it done this week. That or if they had a line on lower km used motor to swap in.

Standard questions apply: are there any other issues with the vehicle? Ie. is it work fixing up this vehicle? Is the engine super high miles? Body in good condition - for another 200k for eg?

From a quick search its about 2k for a headgasket swap and head resurfacing. Obviously belt replacement and timing chain too if youre in there.

Others have also reported the possibility of a cracked block as well.

You can also get a used engine with lower miles. from Japan. Sounds strange but there is a thread in a 4runners group detailing this option:

Yeah good questions. She's owned it since new and has about 270k kms on it. It appears to be a pretty decent vehicle otherwise. Brakes are good, body straight and clean, decent option package with the leather, sunroof, better stereo, dual zone climate control, etc..

For 2k, I'd have no issues... if it's 4k then it starts to get a little more questionable. Especially the cracked block suggestion... yikes and wtf to Toyota if thats a possibility.

Low mile engine swaps might be a good choice. i'll check out that thread and the links in there.

I wish this thing just had the 2UZ that should go forever. That or even just a 1uz as they are much cheaper than 2uz to pick up.

It might start as 2k - but with 270k (presumable AB winters as well) you run the risk of discovering other faults as well.

Could easily run 4k if a crack is found (and somehow repairable), water pump replacement, timing chain issues, etc.

Just have plan B ready to go, to either walk away or repair and keep for, say, 10 years.
