    Default What do you collect?

Sorta an offshoot from the hobbies thread, but more focused on things people collect. Knowing some of you the way I do, I'm sure that there are some interesting collections in Beyond's basements or attics.

    I'll start.

My younger brother and I collect Coleman gear, with a focus on white has and kerosene powered lanterns and stoves. Still growing our collection, but between the two of us we have kit dating back as far back as 1950.

Here are my 3 favourites which are in my personal set.

Coleman 550b Single burner backpacking stove (missing the mess kit).

Got this from Speedog's Uncle's estate. I had been looking for one of these for years when he told me he found one stuffed wayback in a garage. All it needed was a new generator. Use it on every backcountry trip.

    Coleman 222a "backpacking" latern

Also got this from Speedog, as a hand me down. As you can see from the pics it is smaller than a standard latern. Subsequently parts are impossible to find and it only burns for 3 hours. Occasionally use it for its intended purpose, but mostly it is hand for car camping in the jeep or C30 cause it takes up so little space.

Coleman m1950 pocket stove (Vietnam era gift stove)

This is my favourite collector stove. I bought it from a guy on kijiji, wasn't even sure if it would light, I just wanted it as a cool antique. Sure enough, when I got it home it held pressure and lit on the first try. After a few outings it tried to burn me and then the forest down due to worn rubber seals and such. After a 5 dollar repair kit out of the states it burns properly now and doesn't try to explode. Might make a YouTube video on it eventually cause this really was an ingenious design, essentially an updated smaller version of the stove coleman made for the USA in WW2.

    My kind of thread!

I have quite a few collections... I collect full decks of vintage and antique playing cards. I have decks going well back into the 1800's. Within the collection I have sub-collections including Bicycle brand and collecting the different backs, WW2 art pinups such as Vargas and Elvgren and others, as well as old nudie cards, advertising decks, airline decks etc.

I also collect stamps having Canada and Great Britain as well as British Colonies etc going back to some of the very first ones ever produced by them in the mid/later-mid 1800's.

I collect traditional slip joint pocket knives with a huge sub-collection of miniatures (I am talking smaller than the diameter of quarters and dimes in length) going back again into the 1800's that are all fully functioning spring back slippies made by hand as well quite a few modern made ones and French Laguioles and Opinels.

Antique woodworking tools have always be a passion of mine and using them making things without burning any electricity is always relaxing. Tools made in the 1800's right up to pre-ww2 are some of the best quality you can get and refurbishing and using them is fun for me. I collect higher end modern artisan made hand tools as well.

Scotch and wine is another fairly extensive collecting area for me but that has dwindled quite a bit over the last year as I am letting the less the full bottles go away before replacing anymore.

Books are something I tend to find wherever I go as well. No real specific interest but I love finding early classics.

I have a decent start on Canadian and British coins going back into the 1700's and up.

Lately I have been interested in bottle openers and corkscrews but am just in the very base stages.

Man, I could keep going but you all thing I am nuts enough so maybe I will stop for a while! lol! If anyone has an interest in any of these let me know and I will try and get some decent pics of more interesting aspects. also if anyone has anything they are looking to unload in any of these things, don't hesitate to message me!

I collect lots of random shit that I don't use. Like KitchenAid mixers, tendie organizers, BBQs, Teslas, and backpacks.

I have a fairly sizable coin collection, mostly pre 70's Canadian.

Used to collect knives, but it got too expensive and I didn't want to be known as "knife guy".

Not sure if I collect but I have acquired things I over the years that I keep around for no particular reasons. Got a stamp collection that is 4 generations old, lots of WW2, WW1 and pre-war stuff. Other than that, odds and ends...

Grandparent's mantle clock, an old iron, a glass piggy bank full of pennies, a set of horns made from rooster spurs and 2.5 ounces of mercury...

An ancient Alberta Wheat Pool scale, could be 100 years old, a genuine brass 1 imperial pint measure used for collecting grain for a moisture tester, ancient, and some small Coca Cola bottles...

Some old calculators including my first from the 70's (middle one) - paid a fortune for it back then and it still works, some carpentry stuff, some tools and an old Morse code toy...

All will get passed along to our kids, still have my first IBM desktop PC - can't bring myself to toss it. Got some other radios as well and my Mom's wood badminton racket from the late 50"s - that used to raise some eyebrows when I used to play badminton and brought it out.

Yeah the knives I collect are more traditional tools or the like... The miniatures alone I think I am up to around 90 now.

Not sure if it counts as collecting, but I absolutely love Colman lanterns and stoves. I have two white gas stoves, including the one my dad used on trips when I was a kid. One propane comanr stove, and a white gas lantern of my dad's too. He bought that at the Zellers that was in the old Huntington mall, which is super close to my current house, and a regular stop for us back in the day. The globe is broken, and I can't bring myself to buy a new one, or throw out the old one. Kind of feel like keeping it in brien condition inside the cardboard box forever. Maybe that's crazy. I don't know.

I really like the lanterns in a mechanical sense. But I actually never use them.

I collect far too many things.

I have a ton of Funko Pops, some comics, a bunch of car-related lego, some Gemini Jets, I have a few scotches that I collected and don't plan on drinking...

I used to try and collect coins, but now I just have 2 jars; Canadian coins, collector coins (any foreign currency, and fancy Canadian coins).

Well, time to let my geek flag show.

I collect Magic: The Gathering cards, and play the game as often as I can. My collection is north of 50,000 cards and growing.

I used to collect RC vehicles, but I sold out of the hobby.

I am now also collecting tools for woodworking.

I used to hang with a guy who was a certified magic:TG referee, or arbiter, or whatever the fuck it's called in tournaments. He lives in Mountain View California making more money than god now, so I can't say if he's still into that hobby. Really great guy, but I see him every few years at most.
