I remember when I was in my mid 20s people talking about "new math" where they did addition and subtraction left to right and all sorts of other weird approximation tricks and I couldn't wrap my head around why they would ever stray from the traditional math teachings. We grew up on 'mad minutes' and just repeating over and over and over. When I was on facebook those silly 5 + 10 x 14 - 7 = ? questions were all the rage with like 80% of people forgetting BEDMAS. Now in my mid 30s I realise that in my head I tend to do quick calcs that exact same way (from left to right) and thend to think of numbers as blocks fitting together. I've softend my stance on how to teach & learn math and am open to seeing how the system introduces it to the kids now that mine are entering the school system. My kindergartener asks math questions all the time and I've been teaching him the traditional way but I'm sure that will change when it his ciriculum changes from counting to doing something with the numbers. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Algebra in Grade-5:
"Callie is walking to the school. Callie has to walk twice as far as Jack. Jack walks 3 km less than Everly. How far does Callie have to walk?"
The instructions are to "write an expression for each question, then solve".
Great fuckin job, Assholes. The very next question has adequate information, numbers and a solution.
lol

It's a glorious feeling to read comments online, or hear conversations about how shitty the education system is and have absolutely no idea what people are talking about

Isn't Killy at just a single child, ergo a single tuition? I feel there's a 'Coupe-esque joke about lunch bills and students or something. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Protip - schools offering multi-student discounts should immediately move to the top of the list for anyone considering private with 3, 4 or 5 kids... Do as I say, not as I do
Worth it.Haha I feel the same way.
Yea private school is unlikely to be a significant financial burden lol

Following up on my grade 10 math posts. I had a great phone call today with the "student services" Dept of the local cbe high school for my kid who will be in grade 10 next year. Miraculously, they are already signed up for "math 10-15" aka "math 15" aka "full-year math" aka "math 10-prep".
Considering the middle school denies that such a course exists, it's great to hear that the kid is enrolled in it.
A very nice option for kids still considering post secondary.
The student services person did say that if the fall semester portion, which is mostly grade 9 math review, was a struggle, then the school would suggest moving to math 10-2 for winter.
So, it's still up to the kid to pull up their socks and learn the material, but this should provide ample opportunity.

Happy dad day to all the Beyond dads.
Grateful for all of the support and encouraging words in this thread.
I had a legit great father's day this year. Got to make coffee and drink it while reading a book uninterrupted this morning. Went and got groceries the spent the entire afternoon making pasta sauce and drinking margaritas. Both were excellent.

I've decided to flex the dad meme's this year.
Smoking some on sale at costco baby back ribs (traegar pellets + smoke tube) - did a kirkland bourbon/brown sugar rub on mine, honey/hot on tomorrows dinner, and kiddo got the japanese bbq sauce.
God they smell good Dinners late - hour to go. I'll wait.
Drinking Jack and coke, life is good
Happy fathers day y'all.
What is everyone paying for babysitters these days?

anyone have a doula present at your child's birth? I really just got one for myself so it takes the pressure off myself. I hear women in labor are similar to watching the movie the exorcist
