    Default Moving Pods?

Has anyone used moving pods before?

We may be in a situation where our possession dates do not line up nicely and will need to potentially move/ store our furniture for a week or two.

Has anyone used these moving pods? If so I have a few questions:
    1) how much did it cost?
    2) Was the system worth it?
    3) are there any alternatives?

    Thanks in advance.

I used Cubeit when I was moving. i don't recall the cost and can't seem to find a receipt but I feel like it was $500-$600 about 7 years ago. This included the cube being dropped off at location A and then moved to location B (within Calgary). I had the pod/box for 1 month.

I would definitely use one again but i wouldn't use Cubeit. When they delivered the pod they placed it in the wrong location and it took them 6 days to move it and when it came time to pick it up they never showed up at the scheduled time and i had to make a dozen phone calls to get it done.

I have tried a couple in my time. One was the Big Steel Box from Cochrane to Medicine Hat. Cost was $3700 for the transport, a week to load, a week to unload, and 3 weeks of storage in between. This is the largest box i could get for delivery outside the calgary area. It was a 16ft can. MiBox does a larger 20 if its just calgary area. The Big Steel Box is a true seacan and rated for the most weight of all of them. Very robust, waterproof and from what i can tell, handled with care. Storage facility is in lethbridge so there will be some added logistics for a local move with storage resulting in additional costs.

The next i tried was PODS. This was to move from southern ontario to cochrane. Smaller cheaper seacan which tops out at 12ft. Walls are plastic skin with steel roll up door. Far less secure. It was about $3500 for a week to load/unload then about a month transport. Seemed as thought the stuff got rattled around pretty good but i also went across the country. The payment/online system is pretty slick and details everything you need as well as the location and dates of your can. This would probably be the cheapest option locally.

Uhaul, never used but they are wood POS's that i wouldn't use. Also very small and not cost effective. Gets bad reviews too.

Some "real" movers will store the stuff for a few weeks of you need. Call and ask if you prefer not to life everything yourself.

Thoughts on just renting a truck for a week and leaving the bulk of it in the truck?

Looks like 40 bucks a day for a 26’ truck at u haul? Plus mileage but still.

That or rent a big trailer (Or 2) if you have a truck to pull it.

Uhaul is always plus plus plus with their pricing so i doubt it will be that cheap. Gas and Km charges for sure. Then there is all the other "fees" they have.

Yea but you aren’t paying km charges for a truck that’s parked lol.

Even if the fees are double that for 2 weeks it’s a steal, guys are quoting thousands above for pods.

Use any rental place you want, lots of people rent trucks and trailers. Try Penske or something maybe?

This actually sounds like a great alternative.

I used uhaul a couple of times, don't recall any "surprise" fees. Its pretty straight forward - the daily rate plus per km plus any insurance you opt for.

The only thing that might be a bit sketchy is getting the uhaul stolen with all your stuff in it. I'd make sure it was parked somehwere safe.

It’s not a perfect solution, but I don’t see the difference between that and taking a week to drive across the country to move (it happens)

Finding somewhere to park a U-Haul is another hassle. Unattended trucks get broken into often.
