I had foolishly hoped at the outset that the huge ugly backplate would cover the many large and unsightly holes in the wall. I call it a partial success. What a guy really ought to do is patch both holes, repaint, and make a smaller hole in the correct spot.
I don't current have any touch up paint, which is a shame.

Cut a piece out behind your cold air return and take it to paint place and get color matched.

The beauties that painted this place just cut in around everywhere like that. It's okay. I think I have a record of the color name from banjoman more.

What’s the consensus on connected thermostats these days?

Have had Nest. Have had Ecobee.

Anything else to consider? Does a pro home automation setup offer anything additional in this regard?

Have 2 zones of heat/AC with humidity on each, and a boiler with 4 zones of in floor heat ( currently on manual valves ).

Wondering what my options are here, especially if I can automate the boiler in floor in some way. Current have some “tekmar” thermostats that seem to be fine, but it’s also a bridge season so not like my HVAC is anything resembling stressed right now.

Am ok with a pro install system if there is a compelling reason as to how it will work better.

If you want to go cadillac with full energy monitoring, check out :
    https://hbxcontrols.com/
They have controls for tying everything together, also the stuff is locally designed and produced.

My house came with Honeywell Home Wi-Fi 9000's and they are complete trash. Honeywell's app is garbage and the integration into any home automation systems leaves a ton to be desired. I really liked my ecobee in my last house so as soon as I get frustrated enough with these pieces of shit I'll be going back.

I am happy with my ecobee and the three remote sensors I have running. Extremely granular control is available.

Honeywell is to apps as Samsung is to appliances.

One concern I have with ecobee is they just got acquired.

That seldom means good things for the future of the product.

    See… Nest

Serious question, what's the point? Are you going to save $80 a year on natural gas? Just set everything how you want it and fucking walk away.

I’m less concerned about saving money with one as I am maximizing comfort with predictive behaviour, remote sensors, adjusting humidity for window sweating, adjustable schedules and zone targets through the day.

Dropping energy usage when away from the house is a side benefit.

Yes, my programmable thermostat fixation is all about control and comfort and zero about economy.

I have never considered any of these things, I just know my house is 18 or 19 in the winter and 20 or 21 in the summer. That's as in-depth as I've ever been with my comfort. Can't say I've ever noticed window sweat but, its absence wasn't planned.

I suddenly feel like I'm not living properly.

It's possible my OCD is under-medicated.

Your house is those temperatures directly at the thermostat.

For me its two fold. Telling the furnace to be off all day while nobody is home is pretty big savings, then have it blast for an hour or two prior to when people start arriving. Same with AC.

Also can have the temp dropped in the evening for cool sleeping, and then ramp up a bit in the morning so you aren't stuck under the covers on a cold winter morning hating your life.

All things that have a disproportional affect on my happiness levels. As I get older, sleep is crucial and I'll pay any money to get more of it.

Timely. Sounds like a new ecobee is imminent with a more premium enclosure. Glass screen is a nice touch.

I don't need the latest and greatest, I'm happy with whatever version mine is.
