yep i got 2 emails as well, but it's not worth $130 (plus $700 hardware) for 50-150m.. can get better than that for cheaper with other means
They are targetting 300mbps and ~20ms ping by end of year.

Having said that, the Telus hub is more than adequate... If you get good signal. If I got 50mbps like I did when I first got it, I'd stick with it. Telus has also started substantially throttling/managing traffic if you stream a lot of videos or torrent. Chrome browser downloading files can hit 1MBps easy, torrent something with a lot of seeda that should support 500KBps or higher, will get throttled to 100 very quickly.

I've definitely noticed smart hub has been a lot less reliable lately, I had a ton of issues losing connection to the network drives and skype over the last ten days. Not sure if its a wifi issue or an LTE issue but my phone will stall out on wifi then works fine as soon as I turn wifi off. Homepod and Hue have been acting up too so I figure its probably just the cheap smarthub wifi thats the issue.

When it works its fast enough for me but when I have guests it can't really keep up.

Smart hub doesn’t really compete when it comes to unlimited bandwidth that Starlink offers.

You’ll have to get a lot of 5G radio towers to hit those 5G speeds. The range for mmWave is shit.

The use-case for this stuff is easiest where current cell coverage doesn't reach. Those areas are unlikely to have decent 5G coverage in the next decade or more.

I have it on good authority you are spreading FUD, according to Killramos, as by magically relabeling 3G and 4G as mid and long range 5G, it fixes the problem.

Way to buy into the advertising sheeple (this whole post is sarcasm and meant in jest).

Starlink got me good, they sent out emails all at the same time to the multiple smurf accounts I used trying to get into the beta, all said I could "order" and then took me to the "preorder" page I already used at the beginning of the month. Elon Musk really is a meme'r.

Yeah, this is where Starlink will be huge. I'm only 45 min SW of Calgary and I don't even have 1 bar of 3G coverage at the house.

Now that I have had it for a while and have the dish on the roof, it has been pretty good....substantially better than Xplornet. I gave them a chance head to head for a month and I cancelled Xplornet last week. Starlink isn't perfect but if your only options are satellite-based internet, it is the best option and it's only going to get better.

SpaceX has now applied to the FCC in the USA for a license to offer Starlink services on moving vessels, vehicles, and aircraft:

Modems will need to be professional installed but this is good news for RV, Vanlife, Boatlife people.

I can't remember if I posted this before, but my brother has been setup with Starlink for some time out 2 hours north west of Regina, SK...

Very impressive! The latency is decent (I wouldn't say for gaming), but it works great for VDI (Virtual Desktop Infrastructure), video calls, the whole deal.

I know I'm not posting much specific information or details on actual latencies, speed, etc, but it definitely is usable and from an IT professional point of view, it works great!

To be honest I was blown away I could run a full 3 x Display VDI setup with 3D acceleration over it without any issues...

Kinda chapped that it's another $30/mon for roaming. Just got my dishy last week and while it's incredible tech, the uplink and latency isn't quite there yet. Jitter is definitely present on Teams meetings.

It's perfect for Rural netflix, and I was hoping to use it on top of my truck for remote work while camping, but dunno if it's worth $180/mon in it's current state.

It's tough to justify since gigabit ethernet is so cheap in the city, and starlink isn't good enough to replace that yet. But if you're baller and you wanna flex on your co-workers WFH setup, mountain top starlink office setups are the only option.

The intent was never to replace gigabit. Starlink will never have the infrastructure to support entire cities.

But yea $180 is a bit steep. Waiting to see what the cost is going to be for global roaming when I go sail away from the things of man.

Was in the hot tub a while ago and saw a line of satellites, approximately 30 of them, could only see 3 at a time as the passed and disappeared. A couple days ago they must be higher in orbit as you could see all of them. It pretty cool to see.

curious to see how this does for my new place. The roaming option is kinda cool if you can add it for a couple months for camping/hunting season when your going super remote places.

I was told star link had a wait list but it shipped within a week. Arrived before I took possession of my new place.

    Starlink + T-Mobile
    https://gizmodo.com/t-mobile-space-x...one-1849461651

Starting next year, T-Mobile phones will connect with SpaceX’s Starlink service to bring satellite internet to its devices in an effort to bring about, “the end of mobile dead zones.” If it works, the companies believe the new partnership could help bring internet connections to even the most remote areas in the States, especially those currently underserved by cell providers and fixed broadband companies.
    https://www.t-mobile.com/news/un-car...nd-with-spacex

From the middle of Death Valley to the Great Smokey Mountains or even that persistent neighborhood dead zone, T-Mobile and SpaceX have a vision to give customers a crucial additional layer of connectivity in areas previously unreachable by cell signals from any provider. And the service aims to work with the phone already in your pocket. The vast majority of smartphones already on T-Mobile’s network will be compatible with the new service using the device’s existing radio. No extra equipment to buy. It just works.

2-4mbps per cell area. Basically a texting only service.
