    Default Trudeau and WE Charity

Finding it hard to believe this hasn't come up in here.

    https://www.theglobeandmail.com/poli...ntract-to-run/
    https://nationalpost.com/news/politi...-paid-to-speak

I've been following this one since it keeps popping up in my Google News feed.

Essentially Trudeau decided that it's a good idea to award a sole-source contract to handle $900,000,000 in funds (Canada Student Service Grant Program) to the WE Charity, stating they were the only ones able to handle this big of a task. At this point we're finding out that there is a conflict of interest at so many levels between this government, the Trudeaus, Morneaum, and others, that it's hard to keep track.

Listened to a few interviews on the radio the other day and basically the "punishment" for such a conflict was basically being pointed at and told "yup, you did it". At this point, due to the amount of money that WE has paid to the Trudeau family - while simultaneously being contract by the feds for "services", it's looking like the consequences might add up to something more than a simple public shaming.

All in all, a bit of drama to watch unfold...and yet I'm 100% certain the sky would have fallen if the conservatives would have done the same thing. Let alone, the same thing so many times over.

I think my biggest question here is - since when do volunteers get paid?

It's not a bad charity from a cost ratio perspective, top salary is only $160K and average of $55K. United Way of Calgary has similar ratio with a CEO charging close to $300K to run it and has a average salary of $67K.

But this scandal will diminish its ability to fund raise going forward since they have inconsistent policy on paid speakers.

The Calgary Food bank is a registered charitable organization, and I used to be a paid employee of it. Sure there were volunteers, but, you have to have someone that knows the systems there that can direct the volunteers so at the end of the day, shit gets accomplished.

I actually think the charity is handling itself quite well, all things considered. They don't seem to be trying to hide too much, though I think they are walking the line between staying alive and completely throwing the Trudeau's under the bus.

Sure, but were those volunteers paid? My question is in regards to this $900m volunteer student payment program...
    https://www.theglobeandmail.com/poli...itions-at-own/

The Canada Student Service Grant program is facing criticism from some in the voluntary sector who say it is blurring the lines between unpaid volunteering and paid work by offering compensation equivalent to $10 an hour, which is below the minimum wage in all provinces. Students between the ages of 15 and 30 will receive a grant of $1,000 for every 100 hours of volunteer service, up to $5,000 for 500 hours.
Doesn't matter, it's pretty much $900m in handouts to buy more student voters.

To clarify, this is a Covid-19 related grant program to pay student volunteers. WE Charity was chosen to handle distribution of funds, for a $20,000,000 fee, by the liberal government. Libs said WE was the only organization of its kind in Canada that could handle this task, so it awarded the contract without consultation or involving other charities.

These things just barely stir people up anymore, because it is status quo for the Liberals. How many times has JT been caught elbow deep in the cookie jar, with the other hand full of cookies, and his face covered in crumbs and chocolate chips? This is a pretty standard way that politicians transfer public wealth to their own pockets. Trudeau just keeps saying "Oops, I'm sorry" and the east gives him a pass. Which is sickening when you see that he is not sorry, and did not make a mistake. He is purely sorry that he got caught, and the only mistake he made is leaving enough of a trail to get caught in the first place.

Handouts to buy votes is nothing new. And these Liberal family members were not volunteers, they were being contracted to provide a service. Any charity is allowed to have expenses to operate. The much bigger and important question to ask here, is why would the government hand off delegation of this funding to a private charity and wipe all possibility of accounting for the funds, when the government has entire departments to handle this exact type of thing? They essentially treated this charity as a shell corp to create a layer of separation and not be directly tied to this theft of government revenue.

The problem is not, and never has been, Trudeau.

The problem is voters in Ontario and Quebec.

Yes. People who think that he's "actually done a decent job" are a problem.

I don't think scheer or the cpc are the problem either. It's not like they can make any sensible policies.... They are also beholden to the central Canada voters.

Isn't there a government of Canada student employment program that does the exact same thing?

Yea, this I am not aware of but I'm sure it exists. I guess on the other side of the coin I'm glad that the students have to put some serious time into getting these funds, rather than applying for a handout. Paying even minimum wage would, in theory, increase the cost of this by 50%.

Won't happen, western separation has been a farce for decades now - people have spent a lot of time and energy on it (still are) and have accomplished exactly what?
