    Default Recommend Home Networking Installer

We have Cat5e outlets wired throughout the house but the problem is they don't have connectors on both ends -- all the cat5e in the mechanical room are cut ends.

Being an electrician I thought it would be painless, got the tools, got the network switch and voila. Turns out I suck at putting on data connectors. I'd also like to install another cat5e outlet beside a coax outlet.

Who would you recommend to do this work? Any ideas on cost?

Don’t have a recommendation on someone, but try using the pass through rj45 connectors that you crimp off.

Massively increased my cable success yield.

VCE Shielded RJ45 Pass Through Connectors Cat6 with Protection Boots 25-Pack, Ethernet Crimp Modular Plug for Cat6/Cat5/Cat5e STP & UTP Network Cable,Interference-Resistant https://a.co/d/cMcQpWf

I use the VCE shielded ones with good success. Don’t go buy crap at Home Depot and expect good results.

Hmm interesting, thanks man. Same crimp tool I assume?

This was originally the package I tried, and getting everything perfectly trimmed and seated in the connector was driving me nuts.

Yea getting all 8 cables exactly straight and all the way to the end in the right order without passing them through is impossible without breaking something along the way.

With the pass through you cut them to the right length after which is way way easier.

I have this crimp, as long as it has the blade to cut the excess when you crimp the connectors you should be good.

VCE RJ45 Crimper Pass Through, Ethernet Crimping Tool for Cat6 Cat7 Cat5 End Pass-Thru Connector, Support Stripping & Cutting https://a.co/d/5MeDzbu

The connectors that come in those packages are hot garbage.

I have a pass through tool you can have and a bunch of connectors. I prefer old school.

It's a pain but you'll figure it out. Took me while. Killramos is right, better tools will yield better results. Do you have a tester?

Honestly at first when i was doing it, i was stripping all the individual wires lol

A cable tester is a help for this too. So you can confirm you didn't get the wires mixed up. The cheap blinky-light kind is fine.

Has anyone used a company to add drops?
I'm looking to have some added on the soffits for cameras, in the attached garage, and living room.
Looking for costs as I'm not sure if it's worth my time and effort to DIY.

the company we use for work is up to like $250+ a drop now and that's easy runs in a commecial building with drop ceiling, i have to image residential is a lot more difficult and that's likely why the company we use doesn't even entertain residential service.

installing crystals on the ends DIY is very easy once you have the right technique, just watch a couple videos on it...
also i agree with buster (eww), those passthrough connectors are a PITA, and if you dont have the right tool to flush cut the wires exactly, then they cause problems with pushing the end fully in to the socket, i have passthru connectors and still use the OG connectors.

It's not the size that matters, it's the taste it leaves in your mouth.

had these guys run 2 cat6 cables in our house, basement to main floor. called them on a weekday and they came over the weekend.
cost was surprisingly cheap, 2 cat6 plenum cables through the heating vent and was under 250$ from what I recall

The pass-through connectors and crimp tool listed above made short work of ~10 cables. One cable either I screwed up the connector or the wall jack isn't wired correctly. Another cable is in the mechanical room but is a mystery where the other end is LOL.

Tonight I'll put the network switch on the board, connect everything up and pray for the moment of truth.

    Thanks for all the recommendations.
