Default Shaw vs Telus - July 2020

Sup fellas, YMMV as usual but just wanted to make this thread and share as I just got off the phone with Shaw. My 2-year Internet 600 contract is ending so I scoped out what Telus had to offer.

    Telus
    940mbps
$99 per month for 2 year contract
$50 credit if you order online

    Shaw
    1gbps
$115 per month for 2 year contract
    $100 credit

Long story short, Shaw will only go as far as giving a $100 credit so switching to Telus will save me $534.

    Has anyone else renewed recently?

EDIT: You don't get the $200 prepaid Visa on $99/month promotional pricing for Telus.

Got Shaw to agree to $90/month for another 2-year 600 Agreement. Didn’t need a speed increase and Telus doesn’t provide any reasonable services in my area, so limited competition.

    Telus Fiber > Shaw Fiber+ > Shaw 600 > Telus Copper

Shaw "fiber" is not true fiber and it's not symmetrical, so the upload still blows and you don't get 0-1ms pings.

Pretty sure Telus Fiber is $85/mo with $200 bill credit still, and if it's not you can probably get that deal by calling them.

Also, depends where you live, but when I moved I went from 15+ years of zero issues with Shaw to 50% speeds and issues every few days with no change in hardware. Switched to Telus Fiber and haven't looked back.

Good to know. I've been pretty happy with Internet 600 so I'll noodle on it. May choose to stick with the service as BrknFngrs has if I can get a good rate.

Not as much speed but Lightspeed offers Shaw's Fiber+ service for a bit less.

750 down / 20 up + no data cap is 99.95$ with no contract.

I told shaw to pound sand. They wanted to offer me what I had (300 down, whatever the joke of an upload it was) for like 119. They didn't seem to care when I said I was done. Their customer service is absolutely awful now. I am ashamed to say I worked there.

I heard they canned their retentions department. The deals are what they are and they aren’t trying to keep clients.

Watch your billing when you canceled. They kept billing me for 4 months after I cancelled my service, and they even admitted it was well documented in their system that I had cancelled.

    This is correct, Chris.

When I signed up 2 years ago, there was actually another department that had more access/authority for different deals than the front line reps.

The guy I spoke with said that as of June, they restructured their department so everything has been amalgamated. The deals are what they are.

I am leaning towards trying out Telus as I haven't been with them before.

I haven’t had any issues with Telus so far, but my Shaw service was generally good before too.

To be it’s all about available service and price. If you have FTTH Shaw can’t even compete.

FTTH resellers, I'm not sure the CRTC has allowed that to happen yet. Someone on here might know.

Edit, well did some Googling and apparently resellers have had access to other company's FTTH for a few years now - apparently though it sounds like no resellers have dipped into this market yet because they say the bulk rates are too high. Now bulk rates are based upon the cost of facilities/equipment that the companies like TELUS use to provide FTTH and since this is a complete new outside plant build by TELUS, the costs will be high.

Now any of these resellers can file an appeal with the CRTC to have FTTH bulk reseller rates looked at but to date no appeals have been filed.

Curious who or how you spoke to someone.

They are basically trying to push me to their new plans which will be more cost for less.

I am ok paying a bit more to keep my current plan, but I would need to go up by $25-30 to stay within the same speed area.

Two of my family members just renewed with Shaw for less money / more service than last year. Not sure what they did other than call in. Shaw doesn't seem to have a retentions department anymore, when I called to cancel they literally didn't even ask me why, they just did it. Might make it harder to get deals I guess.

Wow that sucks, sorry to hear. They're going to lose a lot of customers if Telus is willing to play ball when they aren't.

What TV package? Id be thrilled with that price. Im basically at the $185 for 750 internet and total TV (list price)

    The chat also mentioned this:

"We used to have more promotions in the past but now we do not have additional promotions so it will be same as it advertised on website.
But you can also check back in next month as promotions are subject to change.

if you are getting better deals from Telus then you can definitely contact our loyalty department at 1 (888) 472-2222 as well"
