    Default Leather Portfolios

Looking to step up a little in the portfolio game, maybe something like a Saddleback but readily available from a Canadian maker would be great.

Not interested in the fashion brands like LV /Gucci/ stick up your ass Killbro or Buster deal

I’m talking home fed, ExtraSlow real quality deal

I've been making leather projects as a hobby for a while now.

I could make you something custom but I likely won't be in Canada until July... Not sure about shipping/customs stuff

I'm currently finishing a couple of belts and a purse for my wife and was then going to make a small notebook cover out of natural vegtan for myself actually.

If you're interested we can chat more. Saddleback is okay but they machine stitch most things so once a thread breaks it will unravel (I have a Saddleback wallet where that happened) whereas I saddle stitch everything by hand so it's way stronger. Saddleback does warranty things but I've never bothered seeking a replacement for my wallet since I just made a better one properly sized for Euro notes.

Edit: Were you thinking something like this or more basic?: https://saddlebackleather.com/leathe...large-padfolio
Problem with that design and all of the pockets is that it's 2 lbs. but it depends on what you want I guess.

I wouldn’t be surprised if there are many good options, but I have two from these folks and am happy with them…

I like saddleback, and I like Adrian Klis too. Neither is perfect, but you can check out the Adrian Klis stuff here:

If you have something in mind a old fashioned cobbler can probably make it for you. It sounds like a simple design is what you are looking for.

Not a portfolio, but this is what I use. Have had it for 5 years, no issues, not sure what could go wrong though.

Moleskine books are great by themselves and honestly pretty nice in the hand by themselves. A leather cover for those is a great addition if you want it to up the style factor.

I have a saddleback briefcase thingy. It's pretty deadly.

EDIT - it's the slim leather briefcase, in black.

That's exactly what I use. Moleskine notebook in a leather cover. I've had the large Saddleback leather portfolio along with the medium sized one. This was 10 years ago or more, before the prices went up exponentially. They are nice but I wouldn't pay todays prices.

They've become cool, which is part of the price increase, but it's also partly inflation and passing along increasing input costs. I don't begrudge someone their price if they provide a quality product and stand behind it.

Many years ago, I ordered 2 belts from saddleback. At the time, this was a big indulgence, and an expenditure that I had to think pretty hard about. They sent one of them in the wrong colour. I was pretty pissed off. Contacted them and they send a replacement belt for no cost and they covered the shipping and they did not ask for the incorrect belt to be returned. I was very impressed.

Looks machine stitched so biggest potential issue is thread unraveling / delamination of the leathers.

Hand stitched is way more work but also way stronger. I'm currently hand stitching the entire perimeter of a belt to secure two layers of 2mm leather back to back for a 4mm thickness. Fingers will probably be bleeding by the end of it...

    +1 for Adrian Klis.

I have one of his portfolios - he also made me a custom wallet, very small like a "card holder" type wallet but folds in two. He does great work, plus supporting a Canadian/Western guy is always good times IMO. The missus has one of his messenger bags she uses daily. Well made tough products.

This thread inspired me to make myself a quick portfolio from a natural vegtan hide I have.

Initially I was going to make a nice "business" portfolio from some pull-up leather but then I saw the brand on this hide was the perfect size for an A5 notebook so decided I'd just make a "rough" field notes style journal.

I left the leather natural coloured (just rubbed in some Aussie Leather Conditioner) and didn't round the corners for the same reason (they'll get beat up and curled in on their own with use and time). I also didn't cut the shape of the inside pocket - it's the natural shape left from the cow's tail area when they cut the hide. Maximized use of the hide to make this in what would have normally been leftover scraps.
