Default Servicing r12 Air Conditioning on my Miata

So what's the deal here? Is r12 gone completely in Canada now? In the US they're still allowed to work with r12, but not sure in Canada. Are there any shops that deal with it?

Or am I hooped and have to transition it to r134a and live with a weaker AC? Not helping my case in keeping shit original here haha.

    Thanks.

Just retrofit it to R134a. The car is still original, your other fluids are at current standards so this will be too. R12 is dead everywhere other than 3rd world countries pumping it out like crazy.

Called around, nobody wants to touch it. City Wide Radiator says they'll rip everything out, hoses and all, and charge me $2k if they can find parts. Doesn't seem like anyone want to just change the seals, dryer and refill.

Any one have shop recommendations that's more reasonable in converting it?

Can't they just vacuum out all the r12 and then refill with r134?

No idea on competency for something like this but I've used this guy to recharge my ac twice before. Seems to have a nice refrigerant setup in his garage and supposedly a HVAC tech.

It'll leak out unless the seals and dryer are replaced. And need to update the connector to allow r134a. Nobody wants to touch that.

r12 and r134a are completely different chemistry - ie different cooling/compression/fluidic properties requiring pretty much all new equipment.

There was a 'grey' solution for a while OZ-12 I believe it was called, that WAS still available in the 90s - not sure of the status now.

edit - HAHA, looks like a mixture of propane/butane is a better solution - unless it leaks or you are in a crash!

edit2 - yep, you can get Hc12 in Canada! (just need someone crazy enough to work with it)

I’ll be a nice guy and check at the shop for some RS-24. It’s a direct drop in for r12 and works with the original oil and seals. If not, my wholesaler may sell me some by the pound if I get them in a headlock and ask nicely.

It's not the right way... But I've done the 100$ Canadian Tire recharge on multiple vehicles. No proper conversion, only once wasted any time trying to vacuum air out. Recharge annually at home - works till next spring

I used the Redtet refill kit (with pressure gauges), on my old Ford and it worked fine for the 4 months I used it before swapping engines. I did a complete fill from empty.

That’d be awesome. Lemme know I’ll take 2lbs of that!

When I was in the industry, we took vehicles to ARA Auto Accessories for AC work. They did everything from recharge, to full conversions. Might want to check with them, if you were still thinking of going that route.
