Default What To Buy Thread - Not About A CRV

Hey beyond so I have a dilemma - family is expanding and need two cars. 4 years with current car (IS250) have killed my car loving soul and I’m looking to revive it. So if you needed two cars, four doors each, and wanted at least a bit of fun, which would you rather do

High HP mid mileage 5ish year old German SUV + cheaper reliable car
Cayenne turbo, ML63 AMG, SQ5 for the main family mover, plus a cheaper, very reliable 4 door car

    Or

Reliable budget friendly SUV (5 year old Lexus, Acura, etc) and a fun but finicky second car (first gen cayenne turbo, Older 335 sedan, older golf R)

What would you do and why?

SQ5 is a very solid/fun enough family mover. Cayenne or ML63 would be awesome but could bankrupt you without a warranty.

FWIW, I’m in a similar boat to option 2. My wife drives a 2011 rdx (cheap and kinda fun. Also nice to have a car that you aren’t worried about kids ruining the inside of), and I have a b8.5 s4 (again not really new or nice enough that I’m worried about putting kids in it). Can take kids in either car, suv is the main kid hauler though. So far, pretty happy with this setup.

The general consensus on this forum seems to be just buy a Trackhawk.

Fun on beyond typically means 0-60 in under 2.34 seconds, so none of the above

Option 2. “Race” SUV’s have never made a ton of sense to me. Get an suv for suv thins, and a side toy for toy things.

If you can wait for a couple of years, the Tesla Roadster Founders Edition (0-60 in under 2 sec) is going to fit nicely in your garage beside the utilitarian Trackhawk.

    Go buy Buster’s GLA45. Tell the wife it’s a SUV when it’s secretly a 400hp hot hatch.

Yeah, the sq5 definitely seems like a solid option. Smaller than the other two so 350hp goes a longer way and not as many big things to repair ... I hear bad things about Mercedes air ride... Your setup sounds solid !!

You’re not wrong. I mean let’s be honest it’s Calgary, no track (yet) nor would I use the track anyways. Just looking for something fun to put the pedal down every once In a while!

Ironically I did talk to Buster about that briefly... my wife is actually a big fan of the GLA45.... I just don’t love the look / shape of them for whatever reason. However maybe driving one would change my mind !

I have a 2012 Acura TL elite package that i'm unloading soon or doing a trade in if you're interested. It doesn't suit my family, but might be good for reliable car.

I haven't spent any real time trying to flip the gla45. Maybe because it is so fun. In terms of pure fun factor I'll not sure you can beat that car. I like the way it looks but styling is always a personal thing.

It's way way more fun than any cayenne or ml63. I walked into the dealer to buy their e63 wagon and walked out with a gla45.

I still can't believe Mercedes built them.

Considering you own an AMG GT that’s certainly saying something. Can you help me find somewhere to wrap it ?!? Lol

Lol. The gt was fun... But in a more serious way. The gla just makes you giggle.

The green is a bit marmite. But lots of people tell me they love it. And it's now a super popular color with Audi and Porsche.

Seems like the ideal choice based on the above criteria.
    +1 for Trackhawk

@riander5 you didn’t mention if you need AT or MT is an option? If so, you should really be considering focus RS, golf R and CTR as well (although that last one is a tough sell with fwd and snow on the ground 8 months a year in this city).

It’s a super cool colour forsure. I’m just not sure it’s exactly for me. I do like how it’s not common though and stands out at bit!

Yeah MT vs AT doesn’t matter a ton. I love MT and would love getting a gt350 or srt8 challenger but those are out of my price range at the moment and also not good year round.

    Get a Mazda CX5... I dare you.
    Just kidding.

I think it comes down to the personality of your partner. If she just see's the vehicles as a appliance. Then which vehicle would she be mostly driving? The SUV or the car..?
If its the SUV, then get a sporty car.

Definitely a bit more of an appliance. We don’t drive much though, would put 10k or less kms on it per year so buying a sportier car wouldn’t be the end of the world! Also glad you commented after I took a little shot at your thread lol

You seem ripe for a Honda Odyssey (sand) & Mazda 3 (Teal)
