Ammonium Nitrate is not unstable. It doesn't just start singing Oklahoma if you try to set fire to it or make a nearby kaboom.
It's an ingredient in a bomb, not a bomb.

Edit - it's a bit like saying "the high capacity magazine factory all turned into guns and did gun things from the nearby smaller explosion".

I thought I saw a similar event online years ago, with the same colour smoke - thats apparently one indicator of what is combusting in many cases. Cant recall the event though.

Do you think this explosion was god's punishment for the scourge of portrait mode which is obviously rampant among the Lebanese population?
That's some fuckin Jeselnik level shit. Well done.
I really like I think about 100% of the Lebanese people I've met, so that hurts, but it's still funny.

What wars are the Lebanese govt trying to start?

Hezbollah, while they have a significant influence, aren’t actually running the country. It’s not an active war zone and until recently has been extremely safe to visit as a tourist. The economic crisis that started last year and today’s explosion certainly changed things, but it’s not like you’re visiting Iraq or Syria or something as you guys imply.
You don't believe Hezbollah is trying to start a war?

You'll have to convince me. Based just on airstrikes and drone strikes in Beirut proper in the past year - claims that it's not an active war zone.

    Government of Canada says
Southern suburbs of Beirut - Avoid all travel

Avoid all travel to the southern suburbs of Beirut, due to the presence of armed groups and the risk of violence from organized crime, kidnappings and threat of terrorist attacks.
    https://travel.gc.ca/destinations/lebanon

I mean I guess you could argue the whole country isn't a warzone but...

Ammonium nitrate very much can burn and explode once it reaches an ignition temperature. Here is how it happens and a list of previous events. Shit is dangerous.

Could be something as simple as a dust explosion:

Lots of videos showing a mushroom cloud. Could it be a tactical low yield nuke? I have family on the eastern border of Lebanon that felt it....
No... Nuclear weapons leave extremely clear signs of their use. For one there's no double flash in the videos. Second nuclear fallout is extremely detectable and would have been publicized within hours. Third that explosion was far too small if you compare it to even the smaller side of low yield nuclear devices. There's no way this explosion was even close to the size of the Tianjin explosion and that one was only a paltry 336 ton explosion.

I thought I read that this explosion was comparable to a kiloton. But not sure on the source

Yeah kinda wish they'd get back to that. But they're too busy trying to start wars.

Amazing what happens when you let a group of Islamic terrorists run a country for a decade.

I visited Lebanon with my girlfriend (now wife) last April and we loved it. I didn't get up to Tripoli but did get North to Baatroun, East to Baalbek and South as far as Tyre all on public transport. Also got to Bsharri, Kafraiya Valley, and the Hezbollah War Museum (Mleeta Landmark) by rental car.

Great trip overall and at no point did I feel unsafe. Lebanese people are fantastic and often looked after us way more than in other countries. The shared minibus driver to Baalbek actually took us to the ruins, bought fresh bread and kibbeh nayeh (raw mince mince lamb with spices) for us on the way, and then entered the ruins with us and acted as our personal photographer. He didn't even want to charge us for the fare back to Beirut (which was a few bucks, at most). Another fellow, former military and current tomato farmer, picked us upo on the road while we were walking to Beiteddine Palace and then waited around chatting with the military and brought us to his house for tea and even invited us to feast on a wild boar he'd killed and stay the night (all in our limited shared Arabic and French as he spoke no English).

Seriously hospitable people and a wonderful country to visit if you're adventurous enough and have the chance. The current political situation and this bombing is truly tragic - I look forward to visiting Lebanon and Syria when things calm down a bit and it's possible to do so.

This is what you get when you let people store nukes in their garage.
0.5 gram microsd delivered by 12,000 pound combustion vehicle and driver.

Yeah for some reason i had it in my head that only nukes could produce mushroom clouds but a quick google after i posted that showed me otherwise.

    Wait... It's now a bombing?

Thought it's just improperly stored AN?

President Michel Aoun said that 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate, used in fertilisers and bombs, had been stored for six years at the port without safety measures, and he said that was "unacceptable".

Looks like US Generals seem to think it was a bomb of some sort and not an accident:
    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...t-Lebanon.html
Well looks like that claim was fake news. Apparently US Defence does not think it was an attack or bomb after all:

    From the article:

"Tuesday's blast ...was the most powerful in years in Beirut."

Think about that for a second.
