Default AB is looking at Nu-cu-lar power

    https://www.alberta.ca/release.cfm?x...EB62BA02A0EFC8

Premier Jason Kenney has signalled the intent for Alberta to enter into a memorandum of understanding with Ontario, Saskatchewan and New Brunswick to support the development of versatile and scalable small modular reactors (SMRs).

“Alberta’s rich uranium deposits, respected innovation and research sector, and technically skilled and educated workforce could make us an attractive destination to develop and deploy SMRs. By signing on to this agreement, our government is taking another step to attract investment and job creators to our province by ensuring we have the appropriate regulatory framework in place should private industry decide to pursue this emerging technology.”

    Sonya Savage, Minister of Energy
SMRs are nuclear reactors that are smaller and more flexible than conventional nuclear reactors. SMRs would be small enough to be built in a factory and shipped by truck, rail or ship.
A typical SMR would generate between two and 300 megawatts of electricity, which could provide power for a village or small city. In comparison, a conventional nuclear reactor can generate 600 to 1,000 megawatts, which can provide power for a large city.

I am neither pro or anti nuclear power as a rule. I won't lie and say I am 100% comfortable with it but that is just because I don't trust industry or government not to get to a point where corners get cut and accidents happen and let's face it... Nuclear accidents are going to have a bigger impact than probably most potential power generating accidents, but that said I know that is a fear response more than an educated one.

I am definitely open to exploring it further!

the small modular reactors are a great idea, and honestly one of the few reactor types that have a hoe of getting built without insane cost overruns. Build the whole thing in a controlled factory environment, and build a bunch of em, and then ship them to site for final assembly.
Plunk down two or three north of Fort MacMurray, and sprinkle another five or six through the rest of the province.

Calling them "SMR" is the first giant step in the wrong direction since that's already what a Steam Methane Reformer is and has been for several decades.
Not knowing this makes me think they're too dumb to be talking about nuclear power.

I'm comfortable with it. Two of the main nuclear meltdowns have well understood causes. Chernobyl was built in the 70's just 20 years after nuclear power was achieved. There wasn't the same safeties and design as there would be today. And Fukushima was built right on the ocean and there was recommendations to increase the height of the coastal walls but that was scrapped for cost saving.

New reactors built here, and with smaller sizes, would be orders of magnitude safer. Alberta especially already has quite strict industrial standards so you'd have to think if they are entering into this that they'll do it right. Nuclear powered oil sands could be a huge drop in emmissions that the industry needs to turn over a cleaner leaf.

Don’t worry I’m sure the government will find some way to tax sieverts or something.

Remember the Liberal/NDP Mantra: if it moves, tax it, if it moves in Alberta tax it at least 10X more.

I really hope they finally get the ball rolling on this. This has been debated and kicked around for decades. BUILD THAT NUC!

@tirebob , nuclear is a great idea and the objectively best way to have a low or no-carbon energy grid.

New nuclear tech is designed to be impossible to meltdown by virtue of how the fuel/coolant is maintained (and what the fuel source even is). I'm not an expert here but am aware of several developments, such as molten-salt reactors, that make such claims.

    Read more: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Molten_salt_reactor

    Notable excerpt:

"Terrestrial Energy, a Canadian-based company, is developing a DMSR design called the Integral Molten Salt Reactor (IMSR). The IMSR is designed to be deployable as a small modular reactor (SMR). Their design currently undergoing licensing is 400MW thermal (190MW electrical). With high operating temperatures, the IMSR has applications in industrial heat markets as well as traditional power markets. The main design features include neutron moderation from graphite, fueling with low-enriched uranium and a compact and replaceable Core-unit. Decay heat is removed passively using nitrogen (with air as an emergency alternative). The latter feature permits the operational simplicity necessary for industrial deployment.[17]

Terrestrial completed the first phase of a prelicensing review by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission in 2017, which provided a regulatory opinion that the design features are generally safe enough to eventually obtain a license to construct the reactor."

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Molten...-first_century

If the above is what they're planning on deploying, there is almost no downside.

If you're against climate change, against fossil fuels/oil AND against nuclear then you just like to argue for argument's sake and have no idea, at all, what you're talking about.

Spent fuel rods is the only rational argument against nuclear. We need to find a safe way to send that shit to the moon.

True, but even as an argument it's fairly weak. Important, yes, but a weak opposing argument given the significant benefits it represents.
