That was my second thought too. Find a fault line where one plate is going under the other. Drill down as far as possible, insert spent rods, cap with cement, and send em to the core. Problem solves itself!

Put it right back in the same hole it came out of in northern Saskatchewan. It's ok and apparently non carbon producing to mine it out of that ground, no reason it can't return there after. It's all natural organic after all.

Any time you mine a material from the ground refine it truck it around - it's got a footprint... So no carbon footprint for nuclear is super wrong - the footprint just of the concrete that will be required in construction is immense.

And to be clear, natural gas plants don't have these same shortfalls? Do they not use mined materials in their construction as well?

The overhead is huge in nuclear. HUGE. You need to mine a ton of it, refine it, build the plant, do everything with safety to the max. You can't run the plant very hard for the same reasons. All the infrastructure is in place for gas already. Pipelines, plants, etc

Calling them "SMR" is the first giant step in the wrong direction since that's already what a Steam Methane Reformer is and has been for several decades.
Not knowing this makes me think they're too dumb to be talking about nuclear power.

Or smart enough to know that a meaningless acronym can sneak by the approvals process and by fearful voters. Whereas if you physically say the word "nuclear" anywhere, people will freak the fuck out and project gets scrapped.
