Default Custom Bike Frames -- think there is a market from Calgary?

Friend of mine is a good welder and I mentioned how bikes seem to be a super hot market and with more and more slack/long HTs (DoctaHawk, Torrent, Fuse, Honzo) that maybe he could fabricate something.

At first he thought I was talking nonsense, and my buddy showed him his root down and he was like... this isn't hard at all to build/replicate

He said he can work with 4035 steel (crumbly) and 6061 aluminium quite easily.

What are you thoughts? Being that we aren't the north shore, is there a Market for custom gnarly "made in Canada" hardtails?

It would be a hard sell for me to buy a homemade frame to do a full custom build on unless it was a fraction of the cost of everything reputable out there. I'd have to be all in for well under the cost of just going and buying a complete to even consider it.

Ti or chromoly is what he’d have to work with for custom frames... probably more luck with road going bikes than hard tails... aluminum these days is well beyond just straight tubes (flow formed) wouldn’t see an advantage from something of lesser tech... good old fashioned lugged, braised steel track frame though...

Now that's an interesting idea, and way more palatable to do a build with. Great thought.

(although I prefer my beef braised, not my steel)

I think that's a supply chain issue, not a supply capacity issue.

Agreed on the Titanium / Steel road bike market not being saturated yet. Goddamn yuppies with deep pockets for fancy bikes! (I would like to order a Titanium or steel 56cm frame with 50mm tire clearance please)

This market is fully saturated in the high end space, if you can do this at a significantly more affordable cost I think there is a market for sure, the only Canadian company in this high end space is Naked, Chromag if you want OEM spec. If you look at all the custom builders today I would argue that most of it is because they have great marketing and dump a lot of money into it. I looked into this a few years back just to see if it was feasible and unless you were fully tooled already it would be too expensive especially with insurance costs. Also, tough is going to be finding a supplier for tubing.

Just off the top of my head here is who you would want to check out to see the competition (metal frames only):
    Naked
    Bingham/Eriksen
    Zanconato
    Dave Kirk
    Carl Strong
    Chromag
    44 Bikes
    Seven
    Moots
    Mosaic
    Speedvagen
    Hampsten
    Baum
    Zukas
    Firefly

MTB and spandex are not mutually exclusive. I am guilty of riding in full lycra on my mountain bike ALL THE TIME.

Most custom builders will do MTB and drop bar bikes.

was thinking that maybe a straight tube chromo (would have to use different headset for tapered HT forks) running an agressive 62-64 HTA, long reach, short chainstays (420ish) and a 76-79 deg STA right over the BB... as a starting "endruro" type Chomo hardtail and see how that goes...
