According to reddit users, drivers in California got a notification on their driver app telling them that unless a judge grants Ubers appeal, Uber is temporarily halting service in California as early as tomorrow.

Fast Food model to the rescue:

In another sign that a new law in California could force dramatic changes to ride-hailing in the state, Uber Technologies Inc. said it’s considering licensing the brand to independently operated franchises. The move would create distance between the ride-hailing company and its drivers and would serve as an alternative to classifying them as employees.

Uber already is not profitable with the curent system. making it more expensive for them is not going to help.

Uber drivers are treated very poorly, but apparently not poorly enough to quit. So, the market seems to think it's fine??? ????

I have no idea how Uber messed this up so much.
On the drivers side. They signed contracts to get paid x dollars for x rides. AFAIK they are not obligated to keep driving but they keep doing it for small cash. so let them?

On the profit side. how can you fail this hard. You have the perfect platform to replace traditional dispatchers, how can they no get the fees and prices to make money?

I think for the most part Uber driving is a side hustle. If that's the case this law is silly. The drivers don't need benefits since they have them at their regular job, and now their side hustle is gone as this move will completely price Uber out of the market. If anything this just looks like some union catering BS.

You aren't wrong in that it was designed as a side hustle, but more and more people are using it as their main source of income. Because of this, they believe they should be considered employees to get benefits, etc.. I think people relying on Uber/Skip as their main source of income missed the whole point of their contract, and at no point should be considered anything more than contractors, if that.
