Given the implementation of Common Reporting Standards, the CRA should have automated software that checks account flows against tax returns. Tying it in with vehicle registry and property data would further highlight mismatches between claimed income and assets worthy of further investigation.

In Sweden, the government actually sends you your completed tax return and all you need to do is confirm it's correct (with as little as a text message).

The only reason governments haven't done this is by choice. I think Buster's quote is perfect - it's not just incompetence but intention.

I'd think the opposite as benefits require more information from the individual taxpayer.

If it were me, there'd be a progressive discount (inverse to income rates - regressive discount?) based on dependents - young, old, special needs and that's it.

The benefits are the entire problem with the tax code as that's where all the populism and cronyism comes from.
