It poured rain in the deep deep south on new years and yesterday was a straight up skating rink anywhere the sun didn't hit. Kids couldn't even tobogan on the little kiddy hill at the park nearby, they would have been better strapping the skates on and bombing it.

Even on winters the ice patches on my side roads are dicey as hell, fallout from the rain the other night, just can't quite melt.

I think the main issue is that it is melting slightly and refreezing.

If it would just stay frozen the weight of cars, rocks, sand etc. would break it up enough such that it’s a nothing burger.

But as it is it is reglassing overnight.

Should get better as temps continue to drop to more consistently frozen.

I don't consider temperature an indication of winter.. I just see it was a measure of the human psyche and how well we can deal with it. I would rather see -5 or -10 with feet of snow.
