As someone who used to literally abandon wells for a living your $200bn would be correct if all 400,000 wells/ sites in Alberta magically went to the OWA (Orphan well association) which will never happen.

That VERY REAL figure was from internal documents from Alberta's Energy regulator back in about 2020. The actual number was $260 billion.

It's insane what we've let that industry get away with.

The fraud goes even further. Although only a small percentage of sites have been reclaimed, the province issued reclamation certificates to sites never visited by inspectors! 95% of the issued certificates were never inspected by government inspectors. Further, experts warn some if these sites are so polluted, reclamation is impossible.

Several media outlets have reported liability estimates provided by the AER in presentations to industry. We want to apologize for the concern and confusion that this information has caused,” says the AER’s Thursday afternoon press release.

“This particular estimate was created for a presentation to try and hammer home the message to industry that the current liability system needs improvement,” the AER said. “While the message to address liability is important, the numbers were not validated and were based on a hypothetical worst-case scenario. Using these estimates was an error in judgement and one we deeply regret.”

The regulator deeply regrets using the estimates because diligent reporters from the National Observer, The Toronto Star, StarMetro Calgary, and Global News – cooperating in a “joint investigation” for the “Price of Oil” series – got their hands on the presentation and speaking notes using a freedom of information request.

"While the message to address liability is important, the numbers were not validated and were based on a hypothetical worst-case scenario. Using these estimates was an error in judgment and one we deeply regret."

The numbers were similarly dismissed by Alberta Environment Minister Shannon Phillips.

"That figure is a snapshot in time," Phillips told reporters Thursday. "It assumes that all oil and gas activity on the landscape in Alberta would stop tomorrow. That's not the case."
