Default The "Fun" What Car to Buy Thread

Enough about CRVs and Daily Drivers. This is the "what car to buy" thread you've been waiting for.

My dad's toying with the idea of buying an LC500 convertible. Some credible car reviewers are saying this is a great buy, and a "special" car. My dad is attracted to it, in part, because it's a Lexus (meaning you can drive it for 20 years and only do oil changes and brakes) - this isn't something you could say about some of its competitors.

So here's the question: There's a 'soft' budget of 130k, searching for a summer car that will serve daily driver duties + weekend road trips. The car is unlikely to be driven in anger on a track day. Ideally the car will be purchased new, but an option that's a few years old is on the table as well (SLS AMG?). Cars in the GT category are the target, convertible preferred. What should he be buying? Highly spec'd Boxster? Stripper model 911? AMG GT? Trackhawk?

(Also, if anyone knows a good Lexus sales guy they'd like to refer, please let me know)

GT4? Or is that not comfy enough of a daily driver for him?

The LC500 is the car with the least buzz ever. Like it's a secret. I had to look up what it even was. I guess it's exclusive? It'll be the coolest car at the seniors home?

He's not enough of a car guy to appreciate it IMO.

Yeah, that's another upside for him I think.

Also, FWIW, my vote likely goes to a Porsche Targa.

Targa is a good option, but he's not keeping it under 130 if that's the case. Might be able to get a sweet deal on one that's been sitting on the lot and not moving though.

992s are here and the market on pre-owned 18/19 991s is softening. For a "dad" car, no need for the GTS, so a regular 991.2 4S Targa or Cab should easily fit into that 'soft' $130k budget. That would be my vote.

That new LC500 convertible is so fucking sexy. I think it'll be over 130k tho optioned out. There's not a lot of options in the convertible space, and only going to get thinner in the next years as it's such a low volume market. Even worse if you want weekend trips, maybe I pack a lot, but yea I want comfort and roomy on long drives.

I guess we need a few more criteria on what he considers must haves. Room? Long distance comfort? Storage? In the old man space sits the LC500 and the E53 Convertible which options out around $110k. This is the last of the E convertibles, as they're discontinued in the next gen. The S5 cab fits in this space too but it's a little bland for my tastes and borderline not fun. On the a little over budget but there's clearance cars because BMW is desperate is the 850 Convertible. That's a sweet ass car (I tested the coupe). I think they were blowing out cabs under 130k.

On the ride a little harder, a little less space but more sporty sits the Z4, for me that's probably the bare minimum in size and comfort for long trips.

LC500 would be a wicked choice.

However if it were me, I'd take a hard look at a Jaguar F-Type R. That exhaust note just gets me

2 seats vs 4 is the question I would ask. Boxster GTS 4.0 would be my suggestion if he can get away with 2 seats. It will hold value pretty well if that's important, it's not as harsh as the spyder, has the automatic top. Supposed to be an awesome driver all around.

For city driving, 100% right. For highway driving, I want a top down experience where the wind isn't trying to rip my remaining hair off my scalp for hours at a time haha. Old people problems.

I drove the Miata to Cochrane the other day, felt like I had a year of additional balding from the wind pulling my hair, with the car running 4000rpms in 5th the whole way. That's not fun.

For an older guy that's not going to track the car ever the LC500 is great. I cant think of a better GT car for that price point with "Lexus reliability". Maybe like a E Class cab if German is okay for him? or an older 911 S cab?

Is he set on a vert?

I don't like convertibles - but I also don't like the sun. So a vert for me means sunscreen (which car leather loves!) and/or a ballcap... So now you look like the old dude in a vert with a ballcap. At that point just go all the way and get a Corvette C7 with a personalized plate and complete the look. Convertibles are weird - the image you have in your head of what it will be like and what you actually look like is vastly different.

    My thoughts:

    - LC500 is awesome.
    - 911 optioned to $130k
    - AMG GT is not actually a GT. It's pretty hardcore.
    - F-Type (not my bag personally).

    I'd probably get the LC500.

Seriously though, I don't wear hats. I can't be the first to bald in my family. I'm slightly winning the race against my 4 year younger brother because he loves hats.

The benefits of being asian. Go out, come back dark and handsome.

Went out with my white step son yesterday in the Miata, every time we hit cloud cover, he's celebrating and I'm sad lol.
