Doc is 90% convinced I'm fighting a kidney stone. Pain is manageable right now.... But 3 hours ago it was the worst pain I've ever felt in my life. Wtf?

They threw same sweet opiods into me which seemed to work. Now I'm home and just took double the dose of Advil

I suffered from kidney stones in the past too, hopefully it passes quickly for you. I couldn’t pass one and had to have surgery.

Kidney stones or any other stones for that matter are no fun. I have had my gall bladder removed since I was 11 or something like that due to stones. Though it was two decades ago, I can't forget the excruciating pain that would keep me up at all times of the night. Take care of yourself and remember 'this too shall (might) pass'.

Really, a meat eater like you? Do you consume a lot of aspartame? Hope it passes quickly.
Any proof, or is this like all the other wives tales about aspartame causing [insert health problem, none of which it has actually been proven to cause]?

My wife had one a while back and said giving birth was less painful (before they gave her drugs).

I had a 12mm kidney stone couple years back when I was visiting calgary. Thought I had food poisoning cuase I woke up with terrible pain in my lower abdomen. Then I pissed blood and new something was up and went to the hospital. Luckily the rockyview was the urology specialization centre if I recall correct. They triaged me and had me in a room in about 10 mins it was amazing. The nurse asked me what my pain level 0-10 was so I said maybe like 3-4 but was doubled over and couldnt move. In my head I was thinking well, getting my arm severed off would be a 10 so 3-4 sounds about right. They ended up doing a basket retrieval and left a stent in my ureter. Ask me how you get that out 1 week later...

Sorry to hear that Buster. Sounds brutal.
My girlfriends father got called in for a Kidney transplant last week. Ive been in and out of hospital with the girlfriend and mother. On a positive, its allowed me to cook them my delicious signature lamb curry and with a secondary dish of lentils. That way they can focus on dad.

Buster, if the pain gets too much and you need help. I would be more than happy to drive you around in your car. No trouble at all. Just reach out.
Just kidding. On a serious note. Goodluck and hope you feel better.

I thought they used ultrasound in most cases to dissolve these?

Sometimes but it’s not always possible. Mine was a 8mm that I couldn’t pass.

They usually try ultrasound if it isn't too big, but that doesn't always work.

    I have had three.

    One was surgically removed.

Normally they take a CT scan to determine if you have one or not.

Seems like they are getting lazy these days.

Drink lots of water with lemon juice.

Kidney stones are usually formed from calcium build up.

Sign of a stone moving is severe pain in lower left back, aching balls like someone just kicked you in your junk.

A lot of times you just piss them out. Feels like a razor blade coming out.

Your doctor should have given you a strainer to catch them. Use it each time you piss.

The er doc said that he was sure enough based on symptoms that he skipped the CT. It was 5am and I didn't argue. Maybe I should have.

Three? Fuck man that sucks. I never ever want to go through that pain again.

Hell if someone said I'd have to cut out beef or something to try to avoid another one, is seriously consider it.

The only real answer is to hydrate more - but this comes with caveats as well. And by this, the studies usually indicate non-fluoridated water. Fluoridation has been loosely correlated with kidney stones.

Its a combined approach of hydration plus electrolyte balance. Magnesium and Potassium both help prevent the buildup of stones. Im sure the Dr. failed to mention this as well.

    It’s not the beef.

    Most likely not hydrated enough.

Diet does help though, stay away from protein powders.

Calgary is notorious for hard water. So filtered water with real lemon juice to break down calcium in your kidneys.

Usually the 2nd, 3rd and so on are not as bad. Almost like the body recognizes it and doesn’t react the same.

Water & lemon juice though, it’s key.
