Let's be clear. Not once have I argued that people should have had input on the design, much less that they were promised they could influence it. Everyone knew it was a transportation corridor but that isn't the point. I am arguing that if the design changed and unnecessarily pushed the road 150ft closer to homes, then the government is responsible for any lost value in the homes, especially for those who bought based on the design they were shown.

Civilized governments ought to respect people's property and the inherent value in them or be willing to compensate. Of course, they're all becoming more dictatorial by the day. No one should reasonably expect that a 110km/h roadway is going to be 30-40ft from their property, especially when a soccer pitch could be built in between the opposing lanes.
All of those people still have their property, no?

City isn't telling them what to do with their houses, why would they be able to tell the city what to do with the city's land?

Forgot I took these a week or so ago. Some idea of width and proximity to homes:

    Attachment 94014

About half the spacing between the opposing lanes:

    Attachment 94015
That isn’t nearly as bad as the backyard pic, which had the scaffolding or whatever on the side during construction to make it look like a ridge racer overpass haha.

It sounds like you have outsourced your responsibility to think for yourself and now want to be relieved from the consequences too. If the city built a beautiful golf course instead, would you write the gov't a check for the subsequent increase in property value by that logic?

On another note, to some minimal extent, the city is also affected if indeed the property value is affected negatively as their annual revenues should drop from that property.

Someone doesn’t know how property taxes work.

I think the real question is, if their 500k ring road adjacent property has a 10k car out front, but now the property is worth 300k. Is their life more balanced now?

They should really be thanking the province for ruining their backyards.

This is the same whining as the Green line in the SE - cant recall which councilor it was but they said that the complainers never attended the open planning sessions (where opinions were actually welcome) an instead, chose to NIMBY well past the initial construction stage.

So, funny enough, the city emergency services group didn't know this was opening so soon, and won't be able to route ems/fire on it for weeks. Someone dropped the ball on communication for this project badly.

Glad they got this bit done. The south chunk down to spruce meadows is key and will allow truck bypass of BC to Montana traffic via highway 8.

That doesn't open for another year. Only open to fish creek boulevard.

Can’t wait to see how quickly I can get to westhills... been waiting forever to laugh at friends for their justifications for the $$ West homes vs sw locations due to DT/mountain proximity

That is one thing I miss not living on the west side. Getting out to Bragg takes another 20 minutes each way.

To accommodate an airplane that's being withdrawn from service in it's first decade. Seriously every airline seems to be dropping A380's.

Not even that complicated, Nenshi just heard the word tunnel and started seeing dollar signs and the ability to throw the phrase “world class” around.

This will eventually cut down on the my commute to the mountains so i'm happy at least this stretch is open.
now the question is, how many lanes are they "opening"?

Edit - Traffic going north will be great. Coming home this way (south) funneling into a single lane exit onto fish creek boulevard (which is the termination point) will be fun. lol
