    Default Drone Advice

Friends. I could use a drone to capture videos of me doing sick leg stands in my backyard.
I am a drone noob and want something to follow me and spot light. What are the lowest models?

I read that this doesn't have the follow me/spot light and doesn't shoot laser beams at wasps. Is that true?

Costco has the Mavic mini I believe, probably best value. Not sure about it having follow you. I want the Mavic Air 2 but it's a grand so kinda hefty price point.

What's better value? I picked up the Mavic mini at Costco but have not opened it. Mini is only 2.7k.
    I want 7.2. Shots must be E P I C

I love my Mavic Mini - Specifically, the quick shot actions. If it could follow like the more expensive ones then it would be 10/10, but I'd still say it's awesome without spending $$$ to get some really cool shots.

Air 2 requires a drone license. That sucks.

It's really not hard to get the license.. but you are held to certain rules then and flying without a license or doing something wrong with a license will still get your ass fried if they really want to.

I need to learn the rules. I hope they are the same rules as Top Gun.

It's very easy to get - just keep google open during the test and you will pass. It's an old pilots exam, almost none of the questions are actually about drones. I literally had questions about a bad weather approach on a Quebec airport.

If you don't want to get a license your only option is Mavic Mini, but it's pretty limited from a feature perspective - and you still can't fly it near airports/helidomes, in parks, etc.

Get a Mavic 2 Pro if you can afford it, it's barely any larger than the Air 2. Otherwise get a Mavic Air 2.

    That's cheating.

I'm starting on the basic license right away. Hope I don't turn out to be the Taylor Hall of drone licenses.

That's awesome. I couldn't find what the advanced certificate allows someone to do vs a basic certificate. Buzz the tower?

Advanced certification allows you to fly over/near people and in controlled airspace with approval. It doesn't allow you to fly in National Parks or airports or anything like that. You also have to pass a flight review with an instructor rather than just the multiple choice 'open book' exam, and the pass threshold is higher (80%) with less time to complete the exam.

Under 250g (Mavic Mini) allows you to fly in more places and over people without an advanced license, but you still can't fly in parks, airports, or anywhere drones are prohibited.

If you need/want help with anything feel free to reach out.

If you buy the MAAC model airplane insurance membership, it not only covers you for 7 figures worth of liability insurance (7.5 million CAD), you also get the "drone/model" license for greater than 250g models included with the membership. This is specifically called the "Transport Canada MAAC exemption". You also do not need to register your drones/models with Transport Canada either under the exemption. You still have to follow all the regular rules in place.

It's $80 CAD per year for a MAAC membership. Not saying it's the most cost effective solution, or even the "best", but it is an option - I realize getting the TC "Drone License" is simple, but if you plan on flying at an R/C field you'll need a MAAC membership usually anyway, plus the insurance is a plus should you ever lose control of your drone and smush somebody in the face with a prop.

Great suggestion. So my drone liability insurance will be higher than my car's. Nice.
I don't think I would need 7.5MM unless my drone smacked 89coupe in the face.

There's really nowhere to fly the drone outside of Wildflower Ranch.
