Transmission issues?

I’ve pretty much only owned stick shift, so when it comes to automatics I’m clueless, but some limited knowledge. We picked up a 2019 Hyundai Kona (2.0L FWD with 6 speed automatic).

Maybe someone can tell me if this is just normal and I’m just not used to how an auto behaves or something is wrong. When coming to a stop it seems like the torque converter really engages and holds on when coming out of high gears. Like I can feel it slowing the car down enough that I don’t need to brake as hard and let off the pedal. It’s almost like a bad downshift when learning how to drive stick. Seems to do it while driving on occasion, when slowing down a bit it will downshift sorta hard, slight jerk almost. It doesn’t shift the smoothest out of first on acceleration as well, but I just chalk that up to I’m sure it’s the same drivetrain as the Elentra with more weight so it’s just a touch underpowered.

Is this just how autos behave sometimes?

Could be.
Reset the brain by disconnecting the battery for 5-10 minutes.
Let it relearn and see if you still see the same issues.

If so, take it to dealer and get it fixed under warranty if it's an actual issue. Doesn't sound normal though but hard to judge by just your explanation.

That seems pretty normal to me, it's not a Lexus. My 8 speed transmission in my old Ram kicked like a mule while downshifting. 100% normal for the 8-Speed

Pretty standard fare, the F150 with 10 speed is quite dumb downshifting quickly to a stop. Lots of bucking/oddness. I find the softer/longer I brake, the more smooth it downshifts. As you mentioned, it basically feels like it is holding the.torque converter locked until 1k rpm and then downshifting without unlocking the converter.

I think it has a lot to do with skipshifting and poor rev matching. Which is funny, as old 5 speed Titan's could do it just fine.

Have you tried experimenting with the various modes? Eg. does it do it in SPORT (or something similar) but not in ECO mode?

That doesn’t sound normal to me. I’ve had a bunch of autos and none of them were that bad, with the exception of the first 1 min when everything is still cold.

For kicks, check the fluid level. If it’s low, or not at max, adding a little might help. But given it’s a ‘19, this should really be something taken care of by the dealer.

Doesn’t seem to do it when I put it in manual mode, I assume because it waits the longest it can before it downshifts. Seems like it just wants to downshift too early.

Can’t check fluid level I believe since it’s a sealed transmission?

I tried talking to a tech about it, but was fed a bullshit response that he has never seen one with low fluid, and that these transmissions either work or fail, never intermittent issues...

Update on this. Tried resetting the brain to no avail.

When I put the car into sport mode the downshift issue is gone, but super jerky up shifts. Tried taking to dealership but got no where.

Yesterday it downshifted hard enough that it slowed me enough that someone almost rear ended me because I short stopped.

Youre best asking the question in a Hyundai Kona specific forum. Its clearly something related to the shift logic if it doesn't occur in all modes. Dealer is going to be a waster of time as usual.

Any way for me to do this? I feel like this is the first thing they should have checked but I don’t think the car has seen a hoist. It is super sporadic so I feel like the tech is just taking it for a quick drive and calls it a day.

I have no idea on your particular model. On the sealed Aisin trannies that Toyota uses, you can pull the drain plug when cold and an approximately known volume will come out; but, then you gotta put that amount back in and they like to keep the fill plug in a secret place.
I'd demand that the shop do it or find a shop that will. This is fucking ridiculous.
