TLDR, partner cards is cheaping out on capacitors, causing crashes
The ones using the minimum specs set by Nvidia. Rip the people that bought those cards.

But FE went beyond spec. This is going to be interesting what happens in the background between Nvidia and partners.

Never pays to be 1st. Also why I always wait for Ti's.

Its weird how many things are going wrong with this launch. If I was buying one im getting warranty 100%. As much as a nividia fan boy I am, I hope that AMD puts some pressure on like with intel. Will be better for both sides.

The issues are all related to overclocking past 2GHz are they not ?

I havn't seen anything that says the cards running stock are failing, but hopfully they get this sorted soon. The gen1 cards will probably get new bios's to limit the clock or voltage allowed until they get a new design sorted.

Apparently they were using cheaper capacitors on the AIB models then fe causing them to crash. That could be from the stock overclocks though.

They followed spec by Nvidia. So if they don't overclock it, it should be fine. But if AIB promise any sort of overclocking/boost and now disable it by a bios update in the name of stability, I wonder how the owners will react.

The issue is with the “automatic overclock” feature of GPU Boost. Some of the AIB partners used cheaper capacitor arrays which reduced the noise filtering for the GPU power supply. Apparently the GPU is very sensitive to this.

The BIOS updates just disable the automatic overlock, but since you’re still able to get the spec that’s advertised, and printed on the box, you’re still “getting what you paid for”. GPU boost is just a bonus.

So if I was looking for a solid card that isn't new that is being cleared out(ie super deal), the 1080Ti is what to look for? I don't need (rather can't afford) latest greatest.

I think 1080Ti new has been out of circulation for at least 2 years. You are probably looking at used ones at various stage of abuse at around $700-$800CAD which is more than 3070's MSRP.

New (or refurb) 1080Ti is being charged at stupid prices on Newegg. You may as well get yourself a 3080 or 3090 at that price.

If you only need 1080Ti level of performance, wait for 3070 and/or AMD's RDNA2 announcement.

Ive seen 2070s as cheap as 500 new, depending on how old your machine is, thats probably a solid upgrade.

The 10 series is all old and used or abused at this point, so id look in the 20 series bracket. But if your over 500, your almost in 3060 territory, so id wait a little while longer unless you have to upgrade now.

I was going to get the 3090 but the performance doesn't seem that big of a jump between the 3080 and 3090. I just wish the 3080 had more VRAM. Hopefully the Ti model brings that to fruition.

That was expected - we knew a while ago this year would be a bad one to be an early adopter:

I'd wait for reviews on the partner cards to determine what variants/cooling solutions are the best, etc. unless you absolutely need it now. Build quality gets better over time as well. This year, partner card manufacturers had a shorter than normal time to work out their designs as well so you may see more growing pains or QA issues.
The ultra-budget cards seem to be experiencing the more issues, with fewer from premium OEMs like Asus.

The 3090 is a Titan card, and Titan cards have always been workstation cards, not gaming cards, thus the performance per dollar increase over an XX80 or XX80Ti has always been very poor for games. It's no different this time around. Nvidia marketing it as an 8K gaming card was extremely dumb and deserves all the scrutiny its getting.

Don't get too hung up on VRAM - most games don't use nearly as much as you think. If you're using a program to track VRAM it's usually showing you allocated VRAM not actual used VRAM. For workstation it's more of an issue.

a 20GB variant of the 3080 is confirmed, whether they will call it a 3080 20GB, 3080 Super, or 3080 Ti nobody knows yet.

HYDRO COPPER There are so many now.

I always buy any mainstream EVGA for the warranty, if that fails I go Strix.

I've seen several 1080ti's for sale around $250 to $350 on Kijiji over the last 2 weeks, FWIW.
