Default Boat audio, same as car audio?

Doing some diagnostic work on a wake setter. Had one side tower speakers not working. Took wires from the other side speakers and connected to that side of amp and big puff of smoke came out of speakers.

Hah, guess the amp is fucked and now speakers on both sides? Sound right? Any further diagnosis to do before replacing amp?
    Its RF Punch P400x2

I think the only way to test boat speakers is to play Nickelback, at volume 12. I've never heard anything other than that out of boat speakers. Ever.

I think this boat only plays ace of bass.

It sounds like it's perfectly setup to play Nickelback now.

But yes, it's the same as car audio. Sounds like the amp is blown, which fried the speakers.

Edit: Also, that's a terrible amp for a boat, it isn't water-proof or even resistant, no wonder it blew. They make specific amps for boats (and hot tubs) that are better for wet applications.

Yup, it's the same. Only difference may be water resistant speakers, but they aren't necessary. Wiring and hookup is the same. We had a full "car audio" system on our Wakesetter in the tower and in the boat.

Well, if you've got money burning a hole in your pocket then you might as well throw it into a bottomless pit like a ski-boat.

We owned two boats over almost 20 years and never did anything more than winter storage and routine maintenance. One time we hit a prop on a log but that was our fault. Even wakeboarding boats are relatively simple, they aren't worth anywhere near what they cost - 80% of it is a fiberglass tub and an old american V8.

A LOT of people get boats and don't take the time to learn how to maintain/use them which is where you run into more of the problems. I remember we were at a lake one time and someone obviously didn't check the tow rating on their minivan, their boat pulled their entire vehicle into the water at the boat launch

My brother based his costs on the cost of an additional tow vehicle, the cost of the boat/trailer and fuel/maintenance versus the number of hours it was actually in the water being used - it was an expensive toy.

You can use any car audio amp, just make sure it stays dry, completely dry and youl be fine. Boat speakers are designed with the idea that they may get wet. Typical car audio speakers are not designed for that sort of environment.
