Default Any Beyonders consider living on a floating house in Van?

My wife wants to live in a floating house in Vancouver...I've never heard of this and my initial thought is wtf are you talking about.

But apparently it's a thing. There are floating houses in Richmond for about $200,000...the only kicker I see is that you don't own land and there are moorage fees of roughly $1,000 a month. That and your house is constantly in a state of motion I guess lol and I all you smell is fish 24/7.

Any Beyonders lived like this or know anyone that has?

We have no kids, just 3 small dogs.

Interesting concept, didn't know these were here, wonder if they still charge a land transfer tax for these

Can they move at all or are they stationary?

If they were in a nicer place with nicer looking units as neighbours it would be cool but that one in Richmond is meh haha

I should've prefaced this by saying I am the furthest thing from being a Beyond Baller lol...our house in Airdrie cost $471,000...so if we move to Vancouver, it looks like we will be buying a townhome in Maple Ridge/Mission/Langley area, something under $500,000....we have 3 small dogs so a condo is out of the question, wouldn't even be allowed I don't think.

Kind of....my suspicion is that these are for rich people who own boats and this is like their vacation homes.

I’m no baller either, I swear I’m not trying to be mean or anything! Haha, if you google maps around that marina it just seems like a weird place to live..

Does your wife also want to start an Instagram account like those "van life" people? Sounds like the sort of thing people who live in these would do.

I saw this the last time I was in Seattle. Seemed like the kind of thing that would be fun to rent and try out, but not the sort of thing you'd want to live in for real.

Hard to decide whether to lose the dogs or the wife without pics.

I've seen similar setup's in some parts of Victoria, along with some people just anchoring their boat in the bay.

You won't smell fish all day. Occasional ocean smell of seaweed.
I think Vancouver is dying, but that's just my 2¢.
    Victoria would be nicer.

I used to fly in/out of Vancouver and I guy I worked with did this instead of flying back east on off days. I can't recall the exact place he moored but I think it was somewhere in north Vancouver because I had to take the sea bus to get back to the airport.

I remember the waves were pretty strong on the upper level of his place and battling the humidity/mold can be a challenge. This was almost 10 years ago now but it would be fun to do for a while I think but not forever.

I'd insist everyone who came to my house to visit call me Captain.
