Default Lets Talk about Slow boring SUV's...

I need to find a SUV for my son to get him through this winter and beyond for a few years maybe.

Looking for a small SUV / Crossover type vehicle.

    AWD or 4WD budget about 7 - 8K.

I am looking at mid 2000's or newer :

    Ford Escape
    Nissan Exterra
    Honda CRV

    Others ???

Most everything in that range is in excess of 200k kms...

Can they still be reliable at that point ?

    Thoughts ??

The first thing I would do is look at the models you're considering and see how many of them can be found in excess of 350K - 400K KM on the clock. You can find plenty of CRV's with more than 400K on them so looking at one with only 210K shouldn't be too much of an issue assuming the vehicle has been taken care of.

Xterras had trans milkshake issues in the mid 2000s.

The 4.0L in those newer Xterra's are an absolute gas guzzler. I would not recommend one of those over an Escape or CRV. My parents 08 Escape has 340,000kms on it. Nothing major for repairs in since they bought it.

Ease of repair is probably more important than estimated reliability. Those Ford escapes are pretty uninspired, but common and should be easy to find parts for.
Buy something that's $1500 under your budget and keep that money for repairs.

Honda CRV or 2001-2004 Nissan Pathfinder can be had for around $2K-5K

    Maybe even Toyota Rav4

Well imagine if instead of writing that letter to the editor, she just posts on a car forum for car enthusiasts. That's Kritafo.

    For 7 K ??

    Link please...

Thanks for the info so far...

Most CRV's in that range are either hail damaged golf ball styles from the NE or have over 300K

I have been looking at a few escapes online...

I do remember that the Exterras had issues just not what they were.

Xterra’s had SMOD issues until at least 2010. Find one where the radiator and transmission has been replaced or a manual transmission model.

Forester is another good option but the 2.5L sohc motor has HG issues, as long as they’ve been done your good to go.

Why 4WD SUV? It's nearly the worst choice for a new driver. It's 2020 and no one gets "stuck" anymore while the AWD that has the same brakes as every other vehicle will simply let him find out how poor stopping is, sooner and at a higher speed.
Seventh Gen Accord forever. The best car for a new driver, ever.
Sorry if derail and if my assumption of new driver is incorrect.

^ See there's the "right" answer, beyond styles - wrong type of vehicle, double the budget.
Phhht. Please. The correct Beyond answer is a Trackhawk, or Miata.
