You drive a 6 speed v6 accord. It's well known on here there is no better. Unless you get him a 2013 V6-6

Escapes are decent and parts are cheap, but absolutely stay the fuck away if it's ever spent time in eastern Canada. The inner fenderwells rust like MAD in salty areas.

I need to find a SUV for my son to get him through this winter and beyond for a few years maybe.
Im probably one of the few on here that thinks like this - but why is an SUV needed for winter?

A FWD car with studded winter tires is going to be a far cheaper option to a) buy and b) maintain. SUV and FWD cars both have 4 wheel braking and 2 wheel turning, which matter far more than acceleration.

SUVs love to roll over when unhappy and have a far worse stopping distance than a car - esp in the winter. Laws of physics.

Is he going to go off road with it? (or else, travel out of the city after big snow falls).

Wife as requested a smaller under powered SUV. He is currently learning in her Rogue and would like to keep in something similar for the first few months of new / winter driving.

OP, if you are getting a older SUV vehicle. Try and aim for the 2005-2006 CRV if you can. But the Gen 2 is fine. I know 200km seems high. I got mine at 212k(2002) and im hitting 397km now. Just try and find one that has been looked after. The engines are solid. They have a chain timing belt. Dont let the oil go low and they will last. That is the main issue to look out for.
They do burn a little oil but nothing to worry about. When you check the vehicle. Look underneath for leaks. If the engine has been opened, you will be able to tell as it has a new silicon seal. Just walk away if it has that. Everything else around the engine can be replaced.
Bonus if you can get a manual. They are hard to sell, so you would get one at a good price. But again, thats if your son can drive stick. They handle better in the snow.
You can get these anything below in the 5K range.

Ford Escape is not a bad option, just make sure you have a competent mechanic. Parts will be easy to find. Then the Rav 4 would be the next choice.

If I am honest, the used car market right now is a shit show. No inventory and you got a lot of overpriced junk on the market. Its bad. Also added to the fact that everyone wants a SUV. I personally cant find anything and I have been tracking kijji and auto trader for a long time.

Like another poster has said. You might be better off getting a car with a really good set of winter tyres.

CRVs are bulletproof if you do proper oil changes especially with the K20 series as they use a chain and skipping oil changes can cause issues.

My girlfriend has a 2006 CRV and its over 320,000 and doesn't skip a beat.

Be warned though.. the slush boxes in CRVs are lack luster and would do much better in a manual.

Its not just women thank think this.

The basic laws of physics apply - a lighter weight and lower centre of gravity means you can stop and turn better - this is even more true when road friction disappears.

Don't forget balance too...before I sold my 370Z (essentially 50/50 weight distribution), I bought a brand new set of cheap winter tires (Maxxis Artiktrekker) for it and I swear it was the best handling winter vehicle I've ever had. Mind you, I only drove on flat roads but still, it was incredible. I still remember TWICE last winter, I drove from Airdrie to downtown during a snowfall, Deerfoot covered in ice/snow all the way, random cars in the ditch, and I didn't lose traction once, followed and drove slowly along with a Mustang in front of me and we both had no problems.

The SUV requirement is also for a bit of added clearance. My street and back alley do not get plowed in the winter and can get massive ruts.

I've seen a few cars sideways on my street because they couldn't navigate the channels in the ice / snow.

Any Subaru Forester past 2000 with the N/A 2.5L engine. Gutless as they come and won't get stuck in snow.
