the only car I would think is a Matrix AWD but they hold their value too much for what they are worth

used TDI IMO... all of the options there are ridiculously undervalued for a reliable and wonderful vehicle
What about a Vibe AWD? Almost the same vehicle as a Matrix. I had a 2009 model from new for about four years and it was great in the winter. Had a large blind spot though, my only real complaint with it.

Wouldn’t touch that 2.0t Audi With a ten foot pole. Great car, but apparently that engine is notoriously bad with oil consumption.
I'd personally just take it for a thorough inspection before judging, I've had two CE lights that end up being a leaky fuel cover.

With that said, it's prob not the best choice for 'slow' or extra ground clearance lol.

I am kind of shocked at the state of the used car market right now... selection is brutal.

I know I will get flamed for this, but I would consider a used RX330/RX400h with higher miles on it (providing it has good maintenance records)

That outback is overpriced for the kms (actually its an American car) and the engine. If it was 180,000 kms and a 3.0R maybe, but not 180,000 miles and a 2.5i. As far as legacies and outbacks, you might want to check out 3rd gen legacies/2nd gen outbacks (same chassis, outbacks just started one body style later). They are as reliable as the 4th gens and typically cost $1000 less for the same kilometers. For either generation, the major issue is the head gasket on the non-turbo engines, and all sorts of issues on the turbo models (GT/XT) except the head gaskets, as one would expect for a 15 year old turbo car.

Here is a cheap 3rd gen legacy that should be pretty reliable if a PPI checks out well:

    https://www.kijiji.ca/v-cars-trucks/...4431?undefined

Even this 1st gen outback should be pretty good. It actually looks like its in great shape, but it is quite a bit older:

    https://www.kijiji.ca/v-cars-trucks/...6088?undefined

Here is a 3rd gen outback that looks ok (says head gaskets are due soon), and is manual which should be more reliable (if your kid can drive manual):

I second the AWD Pontiac Vibe. Virtually identical to the Matrix mechanically, and they are really well built. My father has a matrix with almost no issues at all in 5 years.

Interested in a Chrysler 300 AWD? I know an owner who has one sitting on his driveway but doesn't list on Kijiji because of the flakey people.

@tonytiger55 I think the issue is shopping for new vehicle in Calgary. Go up to Edmonton and you will surprising find prices lower there.
Agreed, the prices are lower for new vehicles. I got into a conversation with a Toyota Rep there. They have been having a large number of customers from Calgary. I have no idea if he is talked out of his buttocks but the prices are a tad lower. I have stopped looking for now. Im not buying anymore.
But to OP. As others have posted. Ford Escape is not a bad choice in terms of cost and parts. The Vibe is a just a Toyota Matrix really. But its not a SUV.
The used car market is full of overpriced reconditioned junk right now.

Is it required that you have to state if your vehicle has rebuild status in your ad...

    If not it should be...

    Frackin hell...

Test drive Ok, negotiated a price that we both like...

    Exchange money, swapped plates...

Then she hands me the registration... Status "rebuilt"

Why I ask...Don't know she says it was like that when we bought it...

Grrr...What a waste of 2 hours of my time...

No it isn't a requirement but I totally agree. I actually sent Kijiji an email suggesting this. "What a great idea - thank you!" they said. 3 years later, nothing.

To be fair, this is a question I ask in the first phone call after also wasting my time on a possible purchase.

Whats with people complaining about used car prices? isn't it simply supply and demand... I mean.. if you're the seller, I'm sure your feeling is reversed...

All i know from selling a car right now, is that any price listed in the low to mid 20's, every default offer is 20k somehow.

Maybe cars should just be sold in increments of 5k until you hit 10k and lower

Because individuals know more than "the market" and everyone else is stupid.

How would you tell if a vehicle had been used as a taxi ?

    Carfax shows nothing...should it ?

Carfax doesn't show that kind of thing, just like it doesn't show ex-rental.

Check inside where some of the typical mounts would have put some wear on the interior?
Maybe some hidden business cards or something under the seats, trunk, etc.?
Passenger doors feel like they have been open and shut a significant amount of times?
    Exterior paint and decal residue?

    Carfax does show commercial use/ex-rental.
